He postulated the existence of a high culture in Germany 250,000 years ago that then spread across the globe. These ideas fitted neatly with those of Himmler and the Nazi regime, although they were critiqued by Alfred Rust.
Sixty years after the fall of the Third Reich, we may be forgiven for assigning the Nazi fascination with the prehistoric origins of the German people as an interesting footnote to their nasty reign. Alas, nationalism, racism, and anti-Semitism are ideas too persistent for that to happen. As we have seen, these concepts existed prior to the emergence of National Socialism, and they continue in one form or another to the present and, sad to say, will no doubt continue in the future.
