A serial artist , frequenttraveler, author and accidental entrepreneur, Paul Jackson is one of America'sgreatest contemporary watercolorists. His artwork hasreceived top honors in national and international competitions, and graced thecovers of dozens of magazines and books.

Paul washonored by the American Watercolor Society with signature membership at the ageof 30. He is also a Signature member of the National Watercolor Society. Paulwas the Grand Prize winner in the “Paint Your Way to Paris ” competition andhas been featured as one of the Master Painters of the World in InternationalArtists Magazine.

In 2008,Jackson was a featured speaker at the International Watercolor MastersInvitational in Lushan, China. In 2009 he served as the invited juror for theAmerican Watercolor Society’s 142nd international exhibition.

Paul Jackson is a sought-afterspeaker, judge and workshop instructor. He is theauthor of The Wandering Watercoloristfrom Chameleon Press 2014 and PaintingSpectacular Light Effects in Watercolor, from North Light Books.

My passion for dramatic light and shadow isthe inspiration that drives me to paint. For me, it is the quality of lightthat makes any subject exciting or dull. The subjects that I paint are chosenspecifically for their aesthetic beauty, and for the way they react to dramaticlighting. The subject reacts to the light, becoming an eloquent symbol throughwhich the idea of the sun is expressed. The medium that I render my subjects inis transparent watercolor. It is considered to be the most difficult andchallenging of all the visual art mediums, but I find it ideally suited forcapturing transparent veils of light and luminous atmosphere.

Watercolor requires intense planning andtechnical finesse, allowing little margin for mistake. Each of my paintingsbegins as a series of thumbnail sketches, and eventually a rough drawing. Usingthis drawing as a map, I create a final drawing in light pencil on 100%Acid-free, cotton rag watercolor paper. I paint with very thin washes of watercolor,each layered and dried on the paper. By layering the washes I optically mixpaint on the paper for luminous color. I generally progress in a light-to-darkapproach to render the subject, but frequently reverse the process for mutedpatterns and details. The highlights in my paintings are the untouched white ofthe paper, generally preserved without masking.

Every mark that I make on the paper, whetherintentional or otherwise, is visible in the final painting. Sometimes, but notoften, I will enhance the watercolor with colored pencil or other mediums toachieve effects beyond the limits of transparent watercolor. For the most part,however, I enjoy challenging the limitations of watercolor, and get greatdelight in achieving the impossible with only the basic materials. Each painting that I create is a carefullyorchestrated symphony intended to awaken the eye and offer a warmth to ignitethe soul. I spend hundreds of hours creating each painting, and only paint10-12 pieces in a full year. Much of my time is spent turning others on to themagic of watercolor through my workshops.
