Beginning and Ending Machine Quilted Stitches

Each line of machine quilted stitching must be secured at thebeginning and the end. But how? We could use back stitches, butthis would build up an unsightly extra row of stitches. We couldform a knot by taking several stitches with a stitch length ofzero, but this would require threading every thread tail onto aneedle to bury the knots. There is a better way.

To begin a line of machine quilting, insert the sewing machineneedle into the quilt.

开始车缝，把缝纫机针插入拼布被中。

Lift the needle and pull on the top thread to bring the bobbinthread to the surface. Some machines will require that the presserfoot be lowered for the bobbin thread to catch. This step will keepthe bobbin thread tails from getting tangled and caught in themachine quilting stitches.

左移开压脚，拉动面线，把底线带上来。有些缝纫机需要降低压脚才能抓住底线。这一步是防止底线藏绕或打结。

Return the sewing machine needle to the same spot, keepinghold of both threads. Reduce the stitch length setting to 0.5 orthe smallest stitch setting greater than zero that isavailable.

把缝纫机针移回原来的位置，左手轻拉两根缝纫线。调整针距小于0.5，甚至小到0.

Take five or six tiny stitches to secure the beginning of the line.Return the stitch length setting to the default length. Somemachines have a “reset” or “clear” button that will do thisinstantly. Machine quilt the line of stitching until approximately1/4″ from the end. Reduce the stitch length again for the tinysecuring end stitches. Clip the top thread close to the quilt topsurface and the bobbin thread close to the backing fabric. Clipboth threads at the beginning of the line close to the quilt topsurface.

开头小针距车缝5，6针。然后调整到正常的针距，有些缝纫机有“重置”和“清除”功能，更方便。

If the line is interrupted by a motif or lines running in adifferent direction, it is possible to “jump” over the section andclip the threads later. Secure the end of the first section withtiny stitches, lift the needle and presser foot, and move the quiltto the beginning of the line on the other side.

如果车缝位置与车缝位置的间距不大，可以直接跳到新的位置车缝，等全部车缝完成后，再剪线头。

Take the tiny securing stitches at the beginning of the nextsection and carry on. Clip all the threads when the line iscomplete. If the gap is very large, it might be preferable to clipthe threads right away rather than jump to the other side.

下图中横线位置是不需要车缝的，就直接跳过再车缝，最后再剪线头。如果位置与位置之间间距很大，还是需要先剪线头再车缝的。

For free motion quilting with the feed dogs lowered, thestitch length setting is irrelevant. The stitch length is createdas the quilt is moved under the needle. Moving a short distancecreates smaller stitches; moving a greater distance creates longstitches. Create tiny securing stitches free motion by moving thequilt very gradually.
