MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES

An old sweater

Scissors

Sewing pins

Scrap yarn

Large darning needle

Paper or card stock for tracing

Non-slip grip pads (optional)

Fabric paint (optional)

STEP ONE

Make a rough outline of your foot on a piece of paper or cardstock. Leave about ? inch of extra space around the edge for comfyslippers and easy sewing. Cut out your shape, then repeat for theother foot.

STEP TWO

Place each cutout on the body of the sweater and cut around them tocreate two solepieces. Tip: Usedouble-sided tape to keep the paper from slipping around whileyou’re cutting.

STEP THREE

Stick your foot into the sleeve of the sweater through the openingat the wrist. Pull the fabric around your leg to the desired bootlength.

STEP FOUR

Very carefully, cut the fabric of the sleeve away from the sole ofyour foot. You’re trying to make it so that just the bottom of yourfoot is exposed. Now you have your leg piece!

STEP FIVE

Attach the sole to the leg piece with sewing pins. Start with onepin at the toe of your bootie and one pin at the heel. Then stretchthe fabric as necessary to line the two pieces up and pin themtogether.

STEP SIX

With the pins in place,  the soleand the leg piece together. To do a blanket stitch, 1. push yourneedle through both layers of fabric from the top, 2. pull the yarnthrough until only a small loop remains, 3. bring your needle backdown through the loop, 4. pull the yarn tight. You can also add ablanket stitch around the opening of your boot to make it lookextra-polished. Tip: Forextra traction, glue on non-slip grip pads or decorate the bottomof the soles with raised lines of fabric paint.
