Installation error in MySQL on Ubuntu 16.04 update-alternatives: error: alternative path /e

I accidentally removed MySQL from Ubuntu 16.04. Now when I try to install it again, error is given. Please help my out with this error:

update-alternatives: error: alternative path /etc/mysql/my.cnf.fallback doesn't existdpkg: error processing package mysql-common (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

sudo apt-get purge mysql-server mysql-client mysql-common mysql-server-5.7

this will remove all related packages and dependencies for MySQL.

Now do:

sudo apt-get autocleansudo apt-get update

After this try to to do fresh installation using:

sudo apt-get install mysql-server-5.7

This will probably fix your problem.
