How can a Shockwave movie pass information to and from a browser?

Communication between Shockwave movies and a Web browser is possible using the Lingo commands ‘externalEvent‘ and ‘on evalScript‘. These commands allow for the exchange of strings between a Shockwave movie and a JavaScript and or VBscript in the Web page. These commands open the door to a very powerful method of information exchange. The possibilities of what can be accomplished are limited only by your own scripting abilities.

Macromedia technical support does not provide troubleshooting support for CGI, JAVA, JavaScript or VBscripts used in conjunction with these Lingo commands. The source example movies linked below demonstrate the ability of these commands to successfully pass information. What you choose to do with the information passed in your own movies is up to your development expertise.

The command ‘externalEvent‘ is used to pass information from a Shockwave movie to the browser. A string is sent to a JavaScript / VBscript located on the same page, which is designed to receive the string. See Example of evalScript command (TechNote 14163) for full details and a working example of externalEvent.

The command ‘on evalScript‘ is used to receive a string from the browser and use this in the Shockwave movie. The string received is sent from a JavaScript / VBscript located on the same page.Example of externalEvent command (TechNote 12645) contains instructions and a working example of evalScript.

The ‘postNetText‘ and ‘getNetText‘ Lingo commands can be used for passing information between a Shockwave movie and CGI scripts. Like the ‘externalEvent‘ and ‘on evalScript‘ commands, information is passed or received by the Shockwave movie as strings.
