Edward Miner Gallaudet
(1837-1917)
Gallaudet became the first superintendent of the Columbia
Institution for the Deaf and Dumb and the Blind in 1857
and in 1864, was named the first president of the National
Deaf Mute College, later known as Gallaudet College and
Gallaudet University. He retired in 1910, after 58 years
with the College.
Gallaudet and his family lived here from 1868-1911. The
esidence continues to be the home for Gallaudet
presidents and their families.

Ballard was the first undergraduate to receive a bachelor of
ience degree in 1866 from the National Deaf-Mute
College, now Gallaudet University. He taught at Kendall
School for 46 years, and he was also the first president of
the Gallaudet College Alumni Association(1889-1898).
The D.C. Chapter of the Gallaudet College Alumni
Association was officially organized in 1905 at a meeting
held here

Born in Washington, D.C., Fay lived her whole life on
Kendall Green. In 1907, she taught at Kendall School for
89 years. From 1929 until her retirement in 1946, she
served as supervising teacher at Kendall School and as ar
instructor in Gallaudet's Normal Department where she
trained teachers of deaf children.
