Terrell Gates sent a task to one of his young analysts with clear directives: make this your priority and have it done by the end of the day.

Until about 16:30, when Gates noticed that the analyst had left for the day. But a little more than an hour before midnight that night, the completed spread sheet arrived in Gates' email inbox.

“Out of sight is not out of mind for this generation” of millennials, said Gates, 41. “You constantly have to be reminded of that. They just want to work on their terms.”

Are young workers brats or brilliant?

At a time when few jobs are guaranteed, youth today feel less inclined to change their styles to match a workplace, Dorsey said. If their bosses don’t allow them flexibility, they’ll job hop — also more acceptable these days — and that means the company potentially loses out on young talent.

A softer approach

Adapting to this new workforce means changing two key facets of management. The first one is offering more feedback — holding millennials accountable and giving them regular check-ups. Once a month generally enough, Dorsey said.

The second thing younger workers want is the freedom to redefine the way they work. The old 8:00-to-17:00 schedule may be seen as a hindrance, and they’ll thrive better in a workplace that respects someone who shows up late after a morning run or darts out early for happy hour but still gets the work done.

Millennials want the flexibility to clock in remotely when they wake up early or later at night, instead of working only from their desks. And let’s face it, workers of all ages juggle everything from family commitments to long commutes, so the demands young workers are making could very well make workplaces better for everybody.

Unlike older workers, you can’t just tell millennials they’re doing something wrong. There has to be plenty of context. Villasante, who’s 51, tries to make any correction into a learning experience. “I will tell them to chalk it up to wisdom. You won’t make this mistake again, and now you know the right way to do it,” she said.

This has worked well for the head of Villasante’s warehouse, who is in his mid-20s but runs his department to exacting details. When he ships clothes to major retailers, every tag and label has to be perfect — one bent corner means the item could be sent back. And while he works hard and learned quickly from early mistakes, he like others from his generation, puts a high value on interests outside of work, Villasante said.

“Millennials have a better balance of work and life,” Villasante said. “They work hard, but they also play hard.”
