Under the helm of South African director Neill Blomkamp, best known for the 2009 sci-fi action movie District 9, Gran Turismo is inspired by the legendary story of Jann Mardenborough, a British gamer turned professional race driver.
At the age of 19, Mardenborough, residing in Cardiff, Wales, emerged victorious among more than 90,000 other gamers, securing the top spot in a competition orchestrated by Nissan’s marketing head, Darren Cox, who designed a creative plan to transform gamers into bona fide racing drivers.
Undergoing rigorous training, Mardenborough seized a valuable opportunity to drive an actual Nissan race car at the Dubai 24 Hour Race. With more such experiences accumulated from renowned sports car races, he ultimately ascended to the podium in one of the world's most esteemed racing championships — the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France.
The movie recounts the inspiring narrative of Mardenborough, intriguingly, as he took on the role of the driving double for actor Archie Madekwe, who portrays himself (Mardenborough) in the film.
Showcasing over 65 luxury racing cars, the movie was filmed at renowned professional racing circuits worldwide, including Slovakia Ring, Dubai Autodrome, Germany's Nurburgring, and Le Mans in France. These heart-pounding sequences combine to create a visual spectacle that might captivate sports movie enthusiasts.
