Tibetans generally regard red coral as being more precious than gold (the most prized beads are selling for as much as $200 per gram in Tibet). Salmon orange to deep red beads are always the most valuable. Round beads are also more sought after than other shapes. Coral has long been used for adornment and is also used in Tibetan medicine as an antidote to poison. In the Tibetan culture, red coral is traditionally worn to ward off negativity. It is often passed from mother to daughter or given as part of a dowry.The majority of antique 'Tibetan' red coral actually originated in the Mediterranean Sea. It travelled along the silk trade route via Iran, Samarkand, Ladakh and then finally ended up in Lhasa. It was also traded to India by a direct sea route from the end of the 15th Century. This made it much easier for Tibetan traders to get a more regular supply. Mediterranean coral is now protected from harvesting, so it is difficult to find undyed beads. The marketplace offers many fake coral beads and dyed alternatives, however, they can never be a substitute for the real thing!

Here you will find ancient and antique Pema Raka carnelian beads. The Tibetan name Pema Raka originates from the sanskrit 'Rakta Padma' (Red or Blood Lotus). It is interesting to note that this name is also given to rubies in both the Tibetan materia medica and Indian Ayurvedic texts. Tibetans believe there are nine varieties of ruby. In Tibetan medicine the Pema Raka is believed to protect from evil spirits and to absorb illnesses.It has been suggested that the majority of Pema Raka are unlikely to be more than 300 years old (+ or -) and are of Chinese origin (still unproven). However, there is also a widely held belief that some Pema Raka could be as much as 2000 years old, and traded to Tibet from Afghanistan or central Asia (also unproven). The great weathering and wear at the perforations does point to a much earlier period for some beads. In our opinion there are clearly different periods of manufacture with some being ancient and others being antique. Whether the carnelian is from the same source also needs more investigation. Since Pema Raka are used as an ingredient in Tibetan medicine, it is likely they have been in circulation since at least the 12th century. Pema Raka beads are not to be confused with the more recent Indian made carnelians.

邦提克與骠珠 Pumtek & Pyu BeadsPumtek = A decorated stone bead made from silicified/opalised wood and in some cases agate, and found mainly on heirloom necklaces of the Chin tribe. The earliest Pumtek (often called Pyu beads) possibly date to 400 BCE. Early 20th century Burmese bead makers also adopted the name Pumtek for their own newly created fossil wood beads. These beads were designed to replicate the Pumtek found on their much prized heirloom necklaces. In the 1990s, Pumtek production started once again and has continued to the present day.
