1984年，非洲依索匹亚等地区出现饥荒，人们由于长期处于饥荒与营养不良而导致死亡，数以万计的儿童正受到饥荒之威胁,人们开始放弃为生存而努力，因为一切的一切似乎都已是徒劳。
英国歌手菲尔科林斯（Phil Collins）提出构想，由数十位当红艺人以【Band Aid】为名共同灌录单曲义卖，将义卖所得资金援助非洲饥民，单曲《Do they know it is Christmas？》于是诞生。这张单曲推出后，立即在世界引起强烈反响。
英国歌坛的此项义举也拉开了美国歌唱界的慈善壮举序幕，由黑人歌手哈利贝拉方提（Harry Belafonte）提出建议，Michael Jackson作为发起人呼吁美国歌手一起灌录歌曲《We Are The World》，之后获得众多大牌歌手的鼎力支持。
1985年2月28日，45名当红歌手放下自我，诚意合作，云集洛杉矶的录音室，灌录了《We are the world》这首义卖单曲，共同创作出音乐界的奇迹。歌曲收录在《USA for Africa》的专辑里。
1985年7月13日，名为“拯救生命”的大型摇滚乐演唱会在英国伦敦和美国费城同时举行。13日中午，演唱会先在伦敦威姆布莱体育场开幕。72000人出席了开幕式。两小时后，美国费城约翰肯尼迪体育场的音乐会也宣布开始，共有9万人观看了演出。演出一直持续了16个小时，并通过全球通信卫星网络向140多个国家播出了实况，估计总共吸引了近15亿的电视观众。全世界100多位著名摇滚乐歌星参加了这次义演，他们之中有鲍博迪伦、保尔麦卡特尼、布鲁斯斯普林斯廷、蒂娜特纳、艾尔顿约翰、 迈克杰克逊……
这张七英寸的塑料唱片是这些流行歌手们的控诉。
《WE ARE THE WORLD》这首歌不仅仅给非洲饥民送去了食物，挽救了数以万计人的生命，也点燃了我们心中的希望，无论是哪个国家，哪个种族，无论是朋友还是陌生人，当他们深陷灾难，无法自拔时，我们都要竭尽所能去帮助他们，用爱去点亮世界。
