Casa Atrevida is a magnificent house built in-between the sea and a river deep in Costa Rica’s Peninsula de Osa. Luz de Piedra Arquitectos built the home using local fast-growing Guadua wood and construction techniques that make the home earthquake resistant and able to withstand floods.
Casa Atrevida hovers three feet above the ground on risers that protect it from river floods and excessive rain. Built in the area of Playa Preciosa, this beautiful home was constructed by trained craftsmen using local materials. The house consists of two structural volumes with two floors each and an open corridor at ground level that fills the house with fresh air.
Thin sliding doors on the first floor let air circulate freely, creating cross breezes for natural ventilation during the day. Photovoltaic panels generate energy and solar water heaters provide hot showers and warm meals. On top of all that, this fantastic home has a first floor balcony complete with a garden featuring 30 different plant species and it even filters grey water!
