A long time ago there were no houses and people lived in caves.
很久很久以前，人们没有房子，都住在洞穴里。
Stanley lived in a cave, but he did not like it.
史丹利住在洞穴里，但他并不喜欢这个洞穴。
The cave was cold. So Stanley was cold.
因为洞穴冰凉，史丹利觉得冷。
’Why can’t we find a better way to live?’ asked Stanley.
史丹利问：“我们为什么不找一个更好的居住方式呢？”
’This is good enough for us,’ said the other cavemen.
’Why isn’t it good enough for you?’
“现在已经够好了。”其他的穴居人回答,
“为什么你觉得不够好呢？”
The cavemen carried clubs.
They were very tough.
穴居人都拿着棍棒，他们很强壮。
Stanley was tough, too.
史丹利也很强壮。
But he liked to plant seeds in the ground and watch them grow.
但是史丹利喜欢在地上播种，看着它们成长。
He liked to paint pictures.
他还喜欢画画。
He liked to be nice to people. He was kind to animals.
他对人很友好。对动物也很友好。
The other cavemen did not want Stanley to act this way.
’’Can’t you act more like a caveman?’’ they asked.
其他的穴居人不想让史丹利用这种方式做事。
他们说：“你不能像个穴居人吗？”
Stanley did not answer.
He went on planting seeds and painting pictures.
史丹利没有回答。
他继续播种、画画。
This made the other cavemen very angry.
’You can’t live here,’ they said.
’Beat it!’
这让其他的穴居人非常生气。
他们说：“你不能在这里住了。”
“赶紧离开！”
They threw rocks at Stanley and chased him away.
他们朝他扔石头，把他赶跑了。
’We’re sorry you lost your cave,’ said the animals.
’I don’t care,’ said Stanley.
’It was cold anyway.’
“我们很抱歉你没了洞穴。”动物们对史丹利说。
“我不在乎。”史丹利回答道，
“反正那里冷飕飕的。”
He looked for a place to live.
’You can’t live in a nest,’ said the birds.
史丹利去找住的地方。
“你不能住在巢里。”鸟说。
Stanley saw a field.
’Does anybody mind if I live here?’ he asked.
史丹利看到一块地方。
他问：“如果我住在这里，有人介意吗？”
’I don’t mind if you don’t snore,’ said an animal who was going to sleep.
“你睡觉不打呼噜我就不介意。”一只正要睡觉的动物回答道。
Stanley made himself at home.
’This is not bad,’ he said.
史丹利就自由自在的。
“这不错。”他说。
But suddenly the wind blew and Stanley was cold.
The rain fell and he was wet.
但突然刮起了风，史丹利觉得很冷。
下雨了，他身上都湿了。
’This is worse than the cave,’ said Stanley.
He made walls to keep out the wind.
“这还不如洞穴。”史丹利说道。
他垒起了墙，用来挡风。
He made a roof to keep out the rain.
他盖了屋顶，用来挡雨。
He made a door, windows and chimney.
He made a house!
他做了门、窗、烟囱。
他盖了一座房子！
’That’s the first house I ever saw,’ said a field mouse.
“这是我见到的第一座房子。”一只田鼠说。
Stanley painted pictures.
史丹利画画。
He planted seeds in the ground and watched them grow.
在地里播种，看着它们成长。
He loved his house.
But he was lonesome.
’I wonder how my friends are,’ he said.
史丹利喜欢自己的房子。
但是他很孤独。
他说：“我想知道我的朋友们怎么样了。”
The cavemen were out hunting for animals.
They carried their clubs.
其他穴居人外出打猎。
他们拿着棍棒。
’Caves are old-fashioned,’ said Stanley.
’Come and see where I live.’
“洞穴已经过时了。”史丹利说，
“来看看我住的地方。”
He showed them his house.
他带他们参观了自己的房子。
’A cave is for bears.
A house is for people,’ said Stanley.
“熊才住在洞穴里，
人要住在房子里。”史丹利说。
’You are right, Stanley,’ said the cavemen.
’This is the way we want to live.’
“你是对的，史丹利。”其他穴居人说道，
“我们也想这样生活。”
They all made houses.
他们都盖起了房子。
Stanley showed them how to paint pictures and plant seeds.
史丹利教他们画画、播种。
He showed them how to be nice to each other and kind to animals, and everybody was happy.
他教他们如何友好相处，怎样友好地对待动物，每个人都很高兴。
