Henry and Mudge Take the Big Test

On a sunny day, Henry and Henry's mother and Henry's big dog Mudge were sitting on their front porch. A man with a collie walked by.
晴朗的一天,亨利和亨利的妈妈, 还有他的大狗玛吉在前门廊坐着。一个牵着牧羊犬的人走过。
Suddenly the man stopped. 'Sit,' said the man. The collie sat. 'Down,' said the man. The collie lay down.
突然这个人停了下来。“坐下，”男人说。牧羊犬坐下了。“趴下，”男人说。牧羊犬趴下了。
Henry looked at Mudge. Mudge looked at Henry. They both looked at the collie.
亨利看看玛吉。玛吉看看亨利。他们都看向了牧羊犬。
'Stay,' said the man. Then he walked a long way down the street. He didn't look back. The collie stayed.
“待着别动，”男人说。然后他沿着街走了很远。他没有回头看。牧羊犬在原地一动不动。
The man turned down another street and disappeared. The collie stayed.
男人转向了另一条街不见了。牧羊犬还是一动不动。
After a while the man came back. 'Susie, heel,' he said to the collie, and they walked down the street together.
过了一会儿，男人回来了。“苏西，走吧，”他对牧羊犬说，他们一起沿着街走了。
Henry looked at his mother. 'Wow,' he said. 'Smart dog,' she said. Henry looked at Mudge.
亨利看着妈妈。“哇哦，”他说。“好聪明的狗狗，”妈妈说。
'Mudge, heel,' said Henry, and he walked down the steps.
亨利看着玛吉。“玛吉，走，”亨利说，他走下了台阶。
Mudge rolled over and started to drool.
玛吉在地上打滚，并开始流口水。
'Well, at least he's good at staying,' Henry said.
“好吧，至少他很擅长待着不动，”亨利说。
'Except when company comes,' said Henry's mother.
“除非他的小伙伴来了，”亨利的妈妈说。
'Right.' Henry frowned.

'And when the cat next door wants to visit,' said Henry's mother.
“除非邻居的猫过来玩，”亨利的妈妈说。
'Right.' Henry frowned some more.
“对。”亨利的眉头皱得更紧了。
'And when your dad is mowing the grass,' said Henry's mother.
“还有你爸爸修剪草坪的时候，”亨利的妈妈说。
'Right.' Henry frowned even more.
“是啊。”亨利眉头不展。
'Maybe Mudge needs to go to school,'
“或许玛吉得去上学，”
Henry said to his mother.
亨利对妈妈说。
'Maybe.'
“可能吧。”
'Maybe Mudge needs a nice teacher like Mrs. Crocus,' Henry said.
“也许玛吉需要一位像Crocus女士这样的好老师，”亨利说。
Mrs. Crocus was Henry's second grade teacher.
Crocus女士是亨利的二年级老师。
'Maybe.' Henry's mother smiled.
“可能吧。”亨利的妈妈笑着说。
'Mudge,' said Henry, 'do you want to go to school?'
“玛吉，”亨利说，“你想去上学吗？”
Mudge snored and drooled.
玛吉边打呼噜边流口水。
'I hope dog school has nap time,' said Henry.
“希望学校有小睡时间，”亨利说。
'And lots of paper towels,'
“还得有很多纸巾，”
said Henry's mother, looking at her porch.
亨利的妈妈看着走廊说道。
Henry went shopping for Mudge’s first day of school.
亨利为了玛吉开学去买东西。
He bought Mudge a new red leash.
他给玛吉新买了一根红色牵绳。
He bought Mudge a new silver collar.
他给玛吉买了一个新的银项圈。
He bought Mudge a box of liver treats.
他还给玛吉买了一盒狗粮。
And Henry bought himself a paddle-ball because he was nervous.
亨利给自己买了一个扳手球，因为他很紧张。
Henry liked to play paddle-ball when he was nervous.
亨利紧张的时候，就喜欢玩扳手球。
And he was nervous because he thought Mudge might flunk dog school.
他很紧张，因为他觉得玛吉，可能会被狗狗学校开除。
He thought Mudge might drool on the teacher's foot. Or sit on a poodle by mistake.
他觉得玛吉可能会在老师的脚上流口水。也可能一不小心坐上了一只贵宾犬。
Or not even stay awake long enough to do anything.
玛吉甚至不能保持清醒，什么都做不了。
Henry paddled like crazy.
亨利疯狂地拍扳手球。
When the first day of school arrived, Henry and Henry's mother and Henry's big dog Mudge drove to a long white building.
开学的日子到了，亨利和亨利的妈妈还有他的大狗玛吉开车到了一座很长的白房子。
Its sign read: 'Papp's Dog School.'
牌子上写着：“帕普的狗狗学校。”
Inside was Jack Papp with a handful of dog treats.
房子里面是握着一把狗粮的杰克·帕普。
'Mr. Papp is your teacher, '
“帕普先生是你的老师，”
Henry told Mudge.
亨利告诉玛吉。
Mudge wagged.
玛吉摇了摇尾巴。
He jumped up to lick Jack Papp's face.
他跳起来去舔杰克·帕普的脸。
'No Mudge!' said Henry.
“玛吉，不要！”亨利说。
'Don't worry,' said Jack Papp.
“别担心，”杰克·帕普说。
'I know what to do.'
“我知道怎么做。”
He held Mudge's front paws.
他抬起玛吉的前爪。
He wouldn't let go.
不让玛吉下去。
He danced Mudge up.
他搂着玛吉向前。
He danced Mudge back.
他搂着玛吉向后。
He danced Mudge all around.
他搂着玛吉转圈圈。
Mudge didn't like dancing.
玛吉不喜欢跳舞。
When Jack Papp finally let go, Mudge didn't jump up again.
杰克·帕普终于放开了玛吉，玛吉不再跳起来了。
He was afraid Jack might want to dance.
他害怕杰克又要跳舞。
'Pretty good teacher,' Henry said to his mother.
“真是好老师，”亨利对妈妈说。
'Pretty good,' she said.
“特别好，”她说。
They watched Jack Papp give Mudge a dog treat and a hug.
他们看着杰克·帕普给了玛吉一粒狗粮和一个拥抱。
So far dog school was fun.
到目前为止，狗狗学校挺好的。
Mudge was not a perfect student.
玛吉不是个好学生。
He liked to lie down too much.
他太喜欢趴着了。
He liked to sniff the other students.
他喜欢去嗅其他学生。
He liked to think about other things.
他喜欢心不在焉。
But he always showed up.
但他总是按时上课。
And he always wagged his tail.
他总是摇尾巴。
And he always gave his teacher a kiss.
他总会亲亲老师。
At home Henry practiced with Mudge.
亨利在家训练玛吉。
They practiced in the backyard.
他们在后院里训练。
Henry had one pocket full of liver treats.
亨利拿了一个装满狗粮的包。
When Mudge did something right, he got a treat.
玛吉做对了，就会得到一颗狗粮。
When Mudge did something wrong, he got 'Aw, Mudge.'
玛吉做错了，就只能得到一声：“喔，玛吉。”
And after a few weeks， Henry needed two pockets full of liver treats because Mudge was getting almost everything right.
几周以后，亨利得准备两包狗粮，因为玛吉几乎都能做对。
He sat when he heard 'Sit.'
他听到“坐”，就会坐下来。
He walked when he heard 'Heel.'
他听到“走”，就会走起来。
And he stayed when he heard 'Stay.'
他听到“别动”，就一动不动。
Most of the time, anyway.
大多数时间，他都能做到。
He still didn't do too well when the cat next door came to visit.
但邻居的猫来玩的时候，他还是不能表现好。
Henry and Mudge went to dog class for eight weeks.
亨利和玛吉训练了八周。
They worked very hard.
他们特别努力。
They went through many boxes of liver treats.
他们用完了很多盒狗粮。
The last day of class was the big test.
最后一天就是大测试了。
Henry and Henry's parents and Henry's big dog Mudge arrived early.
亨利和亨利的爸妈带着亨利的大狗玛吉早早到了。
Jack Papp would decide which dogs passed the test.
杰克·帕普会决定哪些狗狗通过测试。
He said that Mudge would go after the beagle and before the chow chow.
他把玛吉排在了小猎兔狗后面，狮子狗前面。
'Good dog, Mudge,' whispered Henry.
“好狗狗，玛吉，”亨利轻声说。
'We can do it.'
“我们可以的。”
When it was their turn, Jack Papp said to Mudge, 'Okay, Mudge, let's see what you can do.'
轮到他们的时候，杰克·帕普对玛吉说：“好了，玛吉，我们看看你的表现。”
Jack Papp gave Henry a big smile.
杰克·帕普给了亨利一个大大的微笑。
'Sit,' said Henry.
“坐下，”亨利说。
Mudge sat.
玛吉坐下了。
'Down,' said Henry.
“趴下，”亨利说。
Mudge lay down.
玛吉趴下了。
'Stay,' said Henry.
“待着别动，”亨利说。
Mudge stayed.
玛吉一动不动。
Henry walked away.
亨利走开了。
He didn't look back.
他没有回头看。
He walked around the long white building, wishing he had his paddle-ball.
他绕着长长的白色房子走，心想要是带着扳手球就好了。
He sure hoped Mudge would stay...
他当然希望玛吉会好好待着，一动不动……
Mudge did stay!
玛吉没动！
When Henry came back, he saw Mudge lying in the same place, wagging his tail.
亨利回来的时候，他看到玛吉在原地趴着，摇着尾巴。
He gave Mudge a big hug and a kiss and two liver treats.
他给了玛吉一个大大的拥抱、一个亲亲还有两块狗粮。
Henry shook Jack Papp's hand.
亨利握了握杰克·帕普的手。
Mudge shook Jack Papp's hand.
玛吉也握了握杰克·帕普的手。
Mudge had passed the test.
玛吉通过了测试。
He got a fancy certificate.
他得到了一张漂亮的证书。
He got a gold ribbon.
他得到了一条金色的带子。
He got a giant dog biscuit.
他得到了一块巨大的狗狗饼干。
Henry's father and Henry's mother clapped and clapped.
亨利的爸爸和妈妈热烈鼓掌。
'Wow,' said Henry's father.
“哇哦，”亨利的爸爸说。
'Smart dog,' said Henry's mother.
“聪明的狗狗，”亨利的妈妈说。
'Great dog,' said Henry.
“好棒的狗狗，”亨利说。
Mudge wagged at them and barked and drooled one last time on his teacher’s foot.
玛吉朝着他们摇尾巴，汪汪地叫，最后一次在老师的脚上流了口水。
