Women who want to have a baby should take good care of their teeth, claim experts.

Gum disease could significantly delay the chances of conceiving, fertility specialists have found.

It took around seven months on average for those with poor oral hygiene to conceive, but just five months for those who brushed and flossed their teeth properly.

The researchers questioned almost 4,000 women who were 12 weeks pregnant.

More than a quarter of pregnant women have gum disease, and there is evidence it is linked with miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth.

Lead researcher Professor Roger Hart said: “Women should be encouraged to see their dentist to have any gum disease treated before trying for a baby. It is easily treated, usually involving no more than four dental visits.”

“There was also evidence gum disease in men impaired their sperm quality. I would advise any couple wanting to start a family to visit a dentist first,” added Professor Hart.

研究人员对近4000名已经怀孕12个礼拜的妇女进行了调查。

研究发现，超过1/4的孕妇有牙病，并且已经证实它与流产、死产和早产也有关联。

这项研究的负责人罗杰•哈特教授表示：“在怀孕前，就应该鼓励女性去看牙医，进行牙病的相关治疗。牙病很容易医治，就诊一般不会超过四次。”

“同时，证据也表明牙病还会削弱男性的精子质量。所以我建议每一对想要组建完整家庭的夫妇都应该先去拜访牙医”，哈特补充说。
