透纳的挚友、英国著名评论家
约翰·罗斯金曾将透纳比喻为

因为“莎士比亚向你们揭示了人性的真理,
培根告诉了你们自然的法则,
而透纳则给你们描述了自然的样子”。

他从小就被认为是神童。
出身贫苦,十岁就开始专业训练。
他喜欢画水彩画,能将看到的事物
用速写的方式记录下来,
然后回到画室,将它们变成水彩画。

他是风景画界的莎士比亚。
以油画闻名,也是公认
最伟大的英国水彩画大师之一。
喜欢描绘自然现象和自然灾害:
沉船、阳光、风暴、 大雨和雾霾。
他能真实地掌握大自然的脉搏
创造出惊心动魄地的戏剧张力,
描绘出光线和大气的一瞬即逝的效果。
在透纳早期的作品中,
悲壮的历史风景画成为主流,
并延续18世纪古典主义技法,
写实而注重永恒之美,
着力于自然与人类之间的关系。
1829年,透纳完成了他的代表作之一
《尤利西斯嘲笑独眼巨人》(下图)。
这一作品被称为“透纳生涯的中心作品”,
此副画具有极强的视觉冲击力,
与常规的古典绘画颜色完全分道扬镳,
透纳对光与色的运用达到最高峰。

光线、大气、水,都令透纳兴奋不已。
他爱泰晤士河的优美静谧,
爱威尼斯的水光涟涟,
也“热爱任何充满鱼腥及泥泞的地方或事物,
如比林斯门鱼市场、亨杰福特市场……
黑色驳船、有补丁的船帆,
以及任何可能的雾天”
随着透纳艺术逐渐走向成熟,
在他的作品中对大效果的
关注开始远超细节,
不再拘泥于一形一色的得失,
所有的形体都融化在光与色的奏鸣曲中,
充满着浪漫主义式的激情。
也因此被同时期的评论家认为
他的作品永远是”未完成“的状态。

在透纳弥留之际,
他要求家人让他脸朝着窗户,
能看到泰晤士河和太阳。
据一位在场的大夫说:
“恰好上午九时太阳出来了,
阳光直接照到他身上,
亮的像他所喜欢观赏到的那样。
他离世时,一声也没有呻吟。”
