Missing Links: Does LinkedIn Have It All?
Facebook may be the world's top social network when it comes to users, but pound-for-pound, LinkedIn is a worthy challenger. Indeed, in several categories, LinkedIn outperforms Facebook. At first sight, this might not be so apparent. For while Mark Zuckerberg's giant now boasts around a billion users worldwide, LinkedIn has around a quarter of that amount. However, the revenue per user for the two companies is almost identical (around 85 cents in 2012). More importantly, while a swell in mobile ad revenues has been a welcome boost to Facebook in 2013, the company is still way behind LinkedIn in terms of growth rate. Forbes placed LinkedIn at the top of its list of fastest growing tech firms for 2013, with average sales growth of 102 percent, and 51 percent in three-to-five-year estimated earnings per share. The corresponding figures for Facebook were 87 and 25.
Launched in 2002, LinkedIn didn't achieve profitability until 2006. In January 2011, the company filed for an IPO, launching in June of that same year at US$45 per share.
Although it is usually referred to as a social network, there are some obvious differences between LinkedIn and Facebook. LinkedIn has focused on white-collar professionals, functioning more as a data-driven application for recruiters. Facebook, on the other hand, works as a sharing platform on which third parties can build apps.
