Kees Van Dongen came from humble origins in a small suburb ofRotterdam, Holland in 1877. However, shortlyafter coming to Paris in 1900, he achieved immense popularity forhis Fauvist figure painting and was patronized by members ofParisian high society. Aside from hisportraiture, Van Dongen was renowned for enjoying night life,cabarets, and the leisure activities of the wealthy. He visited Italy, Spain, Morocco, and the Southof France where he was absorbed by the favorite pastimes of theupper class.
In the 1920s he began to turn away from his Fauvist colorpalette of the early 1900s, partly because he was inspired by thecolors that he saw in travels to the Mediterranean and also inresponse the tastes of his new clientele. Hislater works, thus, contain a more harmonious color palette as hesought to create more sophisticated and universally appealingpictures.
Van Dongen’s newfound wealth enabled him to buy an elaboratevilla in the city of Cannes. This locationafforded him greater accessibility to his clients and their socialactivities. In the 1920s and again in themid-1950s, Van Dongen rendered picturesque scenes of the Cannesshoreline.
Voiliers dans le port de Cannes captures the luminosity andcarefree sprit of Cannes. The resort activitiesof sailing and strolling on the beach illustrate the city to be oneof respite. However, it is the soft pinkcoloration of the sun reflecting off the beach and Le MontChevalier that emphasizes the particular location. Van Dongen centers our attention upon the whitesail boats which are juxtaposed by the deep blue water. The water is rendered with long, smoothbrushstrokes imparting a feeling of stillness to the scene. The present work, like much of Van Dongen’s lateroeuvre, renders a vibrant, blissful scene, using lustrouscoloration. “Throughout his life, Van Dongenmaintained his youthful spontaneity that was to be a lifelong charmof his personality” (William Steadman and Denys Sutton andCornelius Theodorus Marie Van Dongen (exhibition catalogue),Tucson, University of Arizona Museum of Art, 1971, p.10).

凯斯·凡·东根(Kees vanDongen，1877-1968)，法国籍荷兰画家，野兽派代表人物。以上层社会女性的肖像作品最为出名，擅长以浓墨重彩展示人物魅力。生于荷兰鹿特丹附近的德夫哈芬，少年时代就有素描和色彩佳作。16岁在鹿特丹美术学院学习，期间常到附近的红灯港区以当地的水手和妓女作为创作题材。20岁定居巴黎蒙马特一带，迫于生计干过各种活。1905年结识马蒂斯，并积极参加了野兽派活动，与马蒂斯等艺术家掀起一阵野兽派旋风，在1905年秋季沙龙中展露头角。他是马蒂斯之后野兽主义理论的中坚和领导者。被日后的学者纳入巴黎画派重要艺术家之一。凡·东根具有潜在的表现主义天份，在气质上和趣味上决定了他的野兽主义立场。他从劳特累克处学到了简练、强劲、准确的笔法，以多变的长线条，强烈而率直的色彩，浓郁的艺术手法震撼人。这些独立、真挚感人的艺术表现在他的晚年愈来愈少见，他开始追求轻松、无力而呆板的表现以迎合社会的虚荣。
