我的家乡是在湘桂运河源头的一个小山村，河流远去湘江，运输倒也方便。历有：“鱼米之乡”的美誉。山中有采不尽的野菜，河中有捉不完的的鱼虾；每年洪水竭后，慢流慢逝的河水则绿油油清亮亮，喝一口打心底的甜。
二十世纪八十年代或者更早的时候，村里没有通电更没有公路，众多的房屋是用杉树皮和杉柱建造的，墙壁以卵石为主料拌石灰黄土砌建或直接木板而成，或倾斜或耸立虽参差不齐然古色古香，房前屋后却暗藏着层层梯田……
一架木桥在粮食仓库的坡下相连，似镜的河水飘荡着劳作的小舟；远处炊烟袅袅，岸上的牛车满载丰收而归……
《远逝的年代》是以湘桂运河（又称“灵渠”）源头的一个山村的民风为题材的风景油画。
湘桂运河（灵渠），古称秦凿渠、零渠、陡河、兴安运河、湘桂运河，是古代人们劳动创造的一项伟大工程。位于广西壮族自治区兴安县境内，于公元前214年凿成通航。灵渠流向由东向西，将兴安县东面的海洋河（湘江源头，流向由南向北）和兴安县西面的大溶江（漓江源头，流向由北向南）相连，是世界上最古老的运河之一，有着“世界古代水利建筑明珠”的美誉。
秦并6国 (韩、赵、魏、楚、燕、齐) 后，秦始皇为开拓岭南，统一中国，于秦始皇二十六年(公元前221年)，命屠睢率兵50万分5军南征百粤，每军要占领五岭一个主要的隘道，而占领湘桂两省边境山岭隘道的，就是其中的一个军。最初遭到当地民族的抵抗，3年兵不能进，军饷转运困难。秦始皇二十八年 (公元前219年)，秦始皇命监御史禄掌管军需供应，督率士兵、民夫在兴安境内湘江与漓江之间修建一条人工运河, 运载粮饷。 秦始皇三十三年 (公元前214年)，灵渠凿成，秦始皇迅速统一岭南。
东汉建武十八年(42年)，交趾女子征侧、征贰反叛朝廷，光武帝派伏波将军马援南征，继续疏浚灵渠。
唐宝历元年(825年)，渠道崩坏，舟不能通。桂管观察使李渤下令垒石建成犁铧形的拦河坝，即大、小天平，使河水分流进入南、北渠道。并在南、北渠道上设置壅高水位以利通航的建筑物陡门。秦监御史禄凿渠时灵渠的工程设施，只能从通航的可能性来判断拦河坝的存在，经过李渤的改建，才有了关于拦河坝和陡门的记载。唐咸通九年(868年) 陡防尽坏，渠道淤浅。鱼孟威刺史将沿河40里用石块砌堤岸，用大坚木做成木桩植立为陡门，陡门增至18重，方通巨舟。用工5.3万，用钱530余万缗。北宋庆历四年 (1044年)，桂林衙前秦晟监修灵渠。庆历五年二月竣工，计用工1.085万，用钱7560余缗。所有工料全由兴安、临桂、灵川3县差拨。北宋嘉祐三年 (1058年)，提点广西刑狱兼领河渠事李师中修灵渠，用民夫1400人，34天竣工，共用工4.76万个，此次维修采用“燎石以攻，既导既辟”的方法，清除渠内碍舟礁石，并将灵渠陡门增至36座。南宋绍熙五年 (1194年)，广南西路经略安抚使、知静江府朱晞颜修灵渠，于十二月初动工，至月底竣工，计用工25万，用钱300万缗。元至正十四年(1345年)，岭南广西道肃政廉访副使乜儿吉尼修灵渠，于九月动工，至第二年一月竣工，计用工14.8万，用钱5000缗，修复了铧堤及陡门的溃坏处，舟楫以通。明洪武二十九年 (1396年)，监察御史严震直主持修灵渠，动用民工9110余人，于九月十一日兴工，十一月底竣工，修成渠堤岸长126丈，阔6.6丈尺、高5尺，筑渼潭及龙母祠前土堤151丈、阔5丈、高0.5丈，增高中江石岸45丈，疏渠道5159丈，修斜坡、湎坡、泄水坡5处，砌灌田水涵24处，砌陡岸36处，共用石块石板2.8万块，桩木1.55万余根，石灰67.49万余斤。这次维修，由于加高了大、小天平，2座溢洪水涵泄水量较小，遇洪水时则冲毁堤岸，洪水尽流向北渠，南渠水浅，既不能通航，又影响农田灌溉。因而于永乐二年(1404年)二月，修复如旧。明代另一次较重要的灵渠维修是成化二十一年至二十三年(1485～1487年)，由于洪水泛滥，渠堤毁坏严重，由全州知府单渭主持维修。“用巨石以铧嘴，措鱼鳞，缮渠岸，构陡门”(孔镛《重修灵渠记》)，三十六陡中凡有缺坏者均修葺一新。这是有关大、小天平坝上采用鱼鳞石护砌的最早记载。清康熙五十三年 (1714年)，天平石诸险工倾决殆尽，陡门仅存14座，巡抚陈元龙率通省官员捐俸修治，重修被毁的大小天平由原来用巨石平铺坝顶，改砌成龟背形，将累卵状的鱼鳞形石改用长石直竖。陡门修整了尚存的14座，将已废弃的22座陡门修复了8座。凿去湘江及漓江险滩礁石19处。陡门过去皆用丛石砌筑，这次全用巨条石合缝浆砌，用银2.4万两有余。乾隆十九年(1754年)两广总督杨应琚奉旨修灵渠，由桂、平、梧、玉观察使富明安任总修官，庆远府同知查礼为协修官，兴安县令梁奇通任承修官。于乾隆十九年十一月十七日至十二月二十八日，和乾隆二十年春至三月二十四日两阶段整修，计修堤和鱼鳞石102道，修坝1道，修陡门16座，并疏浚渠口积沙，天平坝基尽钉松桩，上面用青石密砌，两石相接处均以生铁锭钤锢，共用银4900余两。清嘉庆二十四年(1819年)，广西巡抚赵慎畛捐俸修灵渠，由桂林知府周之域监修。于九月十五日动工，至十一月二十日完工。计用工1.496万个，用石256丈，用灰1.2万余斤，用桩木560余根，杉木64根，用银1775两，主要维修陡门。至此保留陡门32座。即北渠4座，南渠28座。光绪十一年(1885年)，洪水冲毁分水坝及南北陡堤，广西护理抚院李秉衡请旨奉准修渠。因铧堤旧址填淤，改建于原址下游30丈，大小天平叠石如鱼鳞，接逢处胶以灰泥，外复巨石。并修北渠3陡，南渠19陡，修四贤祠、飞来石、蛤蟆塘、泄水天平、黄龙堤等石堤5道。新建滑石、鸾塘、牛角3陡。光绪十一年一月兴工，十二年五月完工，用银9400余两。又于光绪十二年十月动工修了社公坝和新陡海底，凿去石门坎、倒脱靴、黑石坝3处暗礁，用银800两，现今所见灵渠，大致就是这次维修后面貌。民国21年 (1932年)，兴安大水，大小天平部分损坏，兴安县长田良骥补修43～75丈一段，长107米。
历史意义
灵渠的凿通，沟通了湘江、漓江，打通了南北水上通道，为秦王朝统一岭南提供了重要的保证，大批粮草经水路运往岭南，有了充足的物资供应。公元前214年，即灵渠凿成通航的当年，秦兵就攻克岭南，随即设立桂林、象郡、南海3郡，将岭南正式纳入秦王朝的版图。
灵渠联接了长江和珠江两大水系，构成了遍布华东华南的水运网。自秦以来，对巩固国家的统一，加强南北政治、经济、文化的交流，密切各族人民的往来，都起到了积极作用。灵渠虽经历代修整，依然发挥着重要作用。

在责任田没有到户的年月很多的事都无法理解，集体劳动集体分配一年四季不分天晴落雨有做不完的农活干不完的事，就是倾盆大雨也要开会整顿。一是执行最新最高指示打击“地、富、反、坏、右”，二是整顿思想落后劳动不积极，谁家的媳妇在劳动之中偷偷跑回家给孩子哺乳的，谁家的媳妇将自己的孩子带到上工地点的，谁起早贪黑私自到已收割完的田地里拾穗回家的都是重点整治对象，等等等等陈谷子烂芝麻有说不完的事开不完的会。
春播秋收是农家根本，忙完秋收便忙着采石烧灰（石灰），男人们负责石矿放炮取石，女人们负责砍柴担到灰窰。接下来就是开荒种地，这一次与常年不一样，根据家庭劳动力保证完成任务的状况可以自己选择开荒地；先是伐木烧炭，（木炭50%送公50%归己），后是放火烧山—开荒成地。故此，各自在荒山中“安营扎寨”待来年春播。
《垦荒家庭》，是当年一家老少进居山林搭棚“安营”的生活写照，作为永久的记忆《远逝的年代》的一页。

《垦荒地》是《垦荒家庭》的姊妹篇，画面以一块荒地和树下休息的人作为场景，描绘当年的现实生活。
据说垦荒是当年生产队冬闲时分给社员的生产任务，以亩记分，然后按劳分配。来年或种上玉米、高粱，然后玉米地里插红薯，生姜，挖完红薯或生姜再种小麦。周而复始成为自然。

麋鹿（学名：Elaphurus davidianus）又名“四不象”，是世界珍稀动物，属于鹿科。因为它头脸像马、角像鹿、颈像骆驼、尾像驴，因此得名四不像。
原产于中国长江中下游沼泽地带，以青草和水草为食物。性好合群，善游泳，喜欢以嫩草和水生植物为食。求偶发情始于6月底，持续6周左右。曾经广布于东亚地区。后来由于自然气候变化和人为因素，在汉朝末年就近乎绝种。元朝时，为了以供游猎，残余的麋鹿被捕捉运到皇家猎苑内饲养。到19世纪时，只剩在北京南海子皇家猎苑内一群。在西方发现后不久被八国联军捕捉并从此在中国消失。直到1898年被英国购买并繁殖到255头，并在1983年将部分个体送回中国。之后有更多的麋鹿回归家乡，并有部分被放生野外。
截至2011年8月，江苏盐城大丰湿地麋鹿总数达1789头；2013年6月，湖北石首市天鹅洲麋鹿保护区麋鹿总数达1016头。
麋鹿是一种大型食草动物，体长170-217厘米，尾长60-75厘米。 雄性肩高122-137厘米，雌性70-75米厘米，体形比雄性略小。一般麋鹿体重120-180千克，成年雄麋鹿体重可达250千克，初生仔12千克左右。角较长，每年12月份脱角一次。雌麋鹿没有角，体型也较小。雄性角多叉似鹿、颈长似骆驼、尾端有黑毛，麋鹿角形状特殊，没有眉杈，角干在角基上方分为前后两枝，前枝向上延伸，然后再分为前后两枝，每小枝上再长出一些小杈，后枝平直向后伸展，末端有时也长出一些小杈，最长的角可达80厘米；倒置时能够三足鼎立，是在鹿科动物中独一无二的。麋鹿颈和背比较粗壮，四肢粗大。主蹄宽大能分开，多肉，趾间有皮健膜，有很发达的悬蹄，行走时带有响亮的磕碰声；侧蹄发达，适宜在沼泽地中行走。夏毛红棕色，冬季脱毛后为棕黄色；初生幼仔毛色橘红，并有白斑。尾巴长用来驱赶蚊蝇以适应沼泽环境。
麋鹿是鹿类动物中较温顺的一种。性好合群，善游泳，主要以禾本科、苔类及其它多种嫩草和树叶为食，而奔跑速度不及梅花鹿和狍，发情期的公鹿也不像梅花鹿、马鹿、白唇鹿那样攻击人，而且占群公鹿见到人接近即逃跑。在哺乳期，人给幼仔打耳号，幼仔的叫声只能吸引母鹿在远处观望，而不像其他鹿那样，母鹿为了保护幼仔而攻击人。雄性麋鹿之间为争夺配偶的角斗也相对温和，没有激烈的冲撞和大范围的移动，角斗的时间一般不超过10分钟，失败者只是掉头走开，胜利者不再追斗，很少发生鹿之间的伤残现象。公鹿占群后，其他公鹿窥视母鹿时、占群公鹿仅用吼叫和追逐等方式赶走对方。以上这些特点决定了它们逃避敌害的能力差，较易被天敌和人类捕杀。

进入冬天，透过窗口观赏窗外河滩的野鸭，看野鸭悠闲地起落、眷恋地漫游，那里好似它们美丽的伊甸园。看着野鸭其乐融融，如同享受着融入了艺术的生命盛宴。
黄昏时分坐在窗前，看野鸭成双成对，往芦苇或草丛中归巢，夕辉洒在身后，波光粼粼，与野鸭蹒跚的碎步相辉映，真是浪漫无限。野鸭不时回头，似乎在对人们说: 想知道幸福吗？其实就三个字: 拥有爱。目送那些亦憨亦趣的身影，还真生出些羡慕之心。
深夜，芦苇或草丛中时有野鸭浅浅的梦呓，偶尔有一个淘气鬼猛然鸣叫一声，惊起一串噪声。河滩上一阵轻风拂过，很快带走了野鸭的聒噪。冷冷的月辉，落在那一片芦苇丛，陪伴野鸭再入梦境。寂静的夜晚野鸭家属更是安静。
夏季到来，学校放了署假，孩子们将自家的鸭子赶进野鸭滩，或捉鱼捞虾或掏野鸭蛋，游泳嘻闹，欢快无比。谁家有小锅的带上，张大出油，李小出米，王黑仔出盐……中餐要在野鸭滩度过，将捕捉到的鱼虾饱餐一顿。
傍晚，欢乐了一天的孩子们赶着鸭群归家，免不了被父母或长辈们一顿骂，叫你别将种鸭赶进鸭滩你偏不听，现在我们村的鸭子越来越小个了，都是那野鸭造的孽，看你老子回来不打死你！当时不知道为什么鸭子个头与体重变小与野鸭有关，直到长大后才彻底明白。
野鸭是水鸟的典型代表，野鸭是绿头鸭(mallard)在北半球的俗名。野鸭属鸟纲、雁形目、鸭科；其数量非常多，是多种野生鸭类的通俗名称，有十余个种类。野鸭能进行长途的迁徙飞行，最高的飞行速度能达到时速110公里。
狭义的野鸭系指绿头鸭，别名为大绿头、大红腿鸭、大麻鸭等。最常见的大型野鸭、也是除番鸭以外的所有家鸭的祖先。

透过傍晚的云霞，故乡小屋顶上，青烟袅袅。往日的此时，母亲总是从破旧的小屋里走出来，在门前那两棵“四季青”旁站定，用饱受风霜的双手，撩起零乱的头发再拍拍前襟的尘土，望一眼远处归家的道路，去地里摘些新鲜蔬菜，等待我和妹妹放学回家。
老家的小屋前有一大一小“四季青”， 青翠青翠的。屋后的松柏就像全副武装的卫士守护着小屋身后。
房屋右侧有一条流不尽溪水，泣沥沥似音乐演奏。每年春季蛙声噪耳，夏季到来会有不同的小鱼游走，螃蟹横行，夜间还有石蛙以及令人不寒而栗、谈即色变的毒蛇……
在过去的日子里，小屋、炊烟、“四季青”、溪流、小鱼、螃蟹、石蛙总是交织成一片绚丽的记忆。那些流失的岁月，像小河边被风吹拂的柳枝，在风中舞动；像山涧的溪流潺潺流水欢快地跳跃……让人回味让人思念。记得小时候放学回家的黄昏——彩霞满天，山林青翠，青烟渺渺，眼前的一切在夕阳的怀抱中镀上了一层黄金，母亲站在夕阳下的“四季青”前望着我们回来的路，身影是那样的慈祥。
那段动乱年岁里，父亲走得早，家里的粮食也总是不够吃，大米饭中80%的是红薯，艰难的日子里母亲精打细算，白天田里地里劳动，晚上在昏暗的油灯下择麻轮线，纺纱织布；或者一针一针地给我们做布鞋，热做凉鞋冬做棉鞋……自己从不穿一件新衣服总是把寒冷和饥饿挡在小屋门外。但那时我还是时常会忍不住发发牢骚。，母亲见了总是默然无语，现在我想来心里总会一阵阵地心酸。有时候站在楼上看到郊外连片的金黄的稻子，我一阵阵地失落。
那段艰苦的日子里，我和妹妹经常早上五点多起床，吃过母亲精心准备的早饭后，赶上六、七里地的山路到学校，中午又回家来吃午饭，只是为了能省出一点生活费。妹妹上完小学就离开了她不舍的校园，我坚持走着通往中学的路。那条路依山修在一条蜿蜒清澈的小河边，每次从河边走过，看到小河水潺潺流走的样子，沉静而忧伤，叮咚声好像生命长河里的浩歌。
经常在小河边就能看到被树木遮掩隐的村庄。青烟从绿色中飘起，淡淡的，老远就能认出自家小屋上的青烟——那暖暖的清香，暖暖的金黄，再远，也能点亮我所有稚嫩的愿望和期盼。有时候夜里归来，村庄里静悄悄的，走在河畔石滩上脚步踩在卵石中挤出哗哗的声响，随即狗吠声零星的叫起来炒醒整个村庄。然后安静的村子里便会亮起一盏盏昏黄而温暖的灯，这是村里的母亲为儿女亮起的家灯，在黑的夜里瞬间便点燃了我们心里的温暖。每次到家，总有热的饭菜等着我。吃饭的时候，我总是喜欢和母亲说求学路上的风、霜、雨、雪，还有夕阳。母亲总是耐心地听着，看到我的狼吞虎咽，母亲的眼睛里总溢满慈祥和幸福。
记得有一个早晨，曙色里的村庄一片雪白。雪花落在山林和“四季青”的枝条上，簌簌的响着。安静的小屋前，雪落的声音的安静、祥和……准时吃过早饭，母亲再三嘱我戴好手套，我嘴里应着心里却总不肯戴，在雪地上一步一个脚印咯吱咯吱的远去了。中午回家的时候，冬季白亮而干净的阳光照在村庄的每一个角落，屋顶烟囱上积着白雪，青烟在白雪上升起，白的雪，蓝的天，青的烟，还有远处积雪的山坡……像诗，又像童话。母亲在那棵“四季青”旁守候着，似乎没有意识到冬天风的凛冽。
现在终于能够生活无忧了，可是我和妹妹却不能天天吃到母亲做的饭菜了。妹妹外地打工，我也在他乡工作。而母亲却患了风湿，身体是一日不如一日，走起路来也是颤颤巍巍，下厨的次数也越来越少了。每次打电话给家里，父亲都要嘱我每星期打电话回家，说是母亲每到周末就坐立不安地等我和妹妹的电话，我听完眼睛湿润了，不知道母亲一个人挪着蹒跚的步子，失望了多少次……母亲总是在电话里念叨，说给我们晒了红薯干，剥好了家里种的花生……
每当我和妹妹归家，母亲的病似乎一下子好了很多，忙里忙外的，我们劝她多休息她总也不听，千方百计把各种美味摆上餐桌。去年八月的一个大雨天我突然回家，未提前告诉母亲，母亲一个人怅然的坐在小屋窗前的椅子上。母亲的视力严重退化，我叫了声妈，她才认出我并且眼眶里一下子流出了泪水。母亲突然就老了，她的皱纹和白发增添了许多。母亲在电话里说，她喜欢读我写给家里的信，在母亲面前，我的文字突然无地自容。年过古稀的母亲为了儿女过多地消耗着自己的生命，她的皱纹和白发织成故乡蜿蜒的重山，于厚重坚韧中延伸儿女的幸福。母亲，您不应该生下我这个不孝的儿子，不能在您身边照顾你，空记着您的叮嘱！
如今在这个喧嚣的城市里行走，再也见不到村庄的炊烟，见不到小屋。原来一直都以为只有具体的人和事才会让人回忆和怀恋，其实更能让人回忆和怀恋的，有时候甚至是一丝气息一种味道，甚至一种景象：像小屋，像炊烟……现在故乡的山林和“四季青”，小屋在斑驳中坍圮的墙垣，小屋前的石阶结满了青苔。然而再没有了母亲在“四季青”旁的守望，更没了一缕缕金色的夕阳飘渺的炊烟，母亲流干了最后一滴汗水永远离开了这间小屋这个世界……
