AMD just officially unveiled its Ryzen desktop processor family, a chip that it says can compete with Intel's chips at long last. AMD's last generation of desktop chips was disappointing, and has been largely relegated to low-end computers. But Ryzen manages a 52 percent boost in instructions per cycle (IPC) over last time, which puts it on a level playing field with the best Intel has to offer.

The Ryzen family will come in multiple flavors, but the high-end Ryzen 7 is shipping first. The chip has eight cores and 16 threads, and starts at $329. At the top end is the 3.6GHz (4.0GHz turbo), $499 Ryzen 7 1800X, which compares well with Intel's $1,050 i7-6900K. According to AMD's benchmarks, the 1800X ties the 6900K on singlethreaded benchmarks, and beats Intel on multithreaded performance.

AMD uses a few hundred more megahertz to get there, which means AMD isn't doing quite as much as Intel Broadwell per hertz. But it's the end result that matters, and AMD is claiming to match or beat Intel across the spectrum with better prices — the dream scenario, basically.

Hopefully Ryzen can deliver, and we can get a real fight in the desktop market, which will be wonderful for anybody not named 'Intel.'

Yes and no. If you did a lot of multitasking, an FX 6300 overclocked or an FX 83×0 (stock or overclocked) were better than i5 Sandy/Ivy. (meaning CPUs for the same price)

Well except Intel basically admitted they stopped caring about the desktop CPUs. So it’s going to be quickly a one-sided competition again pretty quickly IMO.

They stopped caring because they knew they didn’t have to compete. Microsoft stopped caring about IE when Netscape died, but they certainly care now (Edge is actually really good.) Intel’s going to have to compete if they want to survive now.

Everybody mew Ryzen was coming. I doubt they will suddenly care again. Either they are already ready (which I kind of doubt honestly), or they will just have to drop their prices to try and stay 'competitive'.

The lucky thing for AMD is that the next Intel desktops CPUs are still basically Skylake v3, while AMD’s next CPUs will have 10% higher IPC over Ryzen.

I’m very excited for Raven Ridge, the mobile platform. It’s rumored to have a Vega graphics core and operate with less power than an Intel U-Series, but offer the same processor performance and PS4 class graphics on an ultrabook!

They abandoned atom, they failed mobile and they are going to stop caring about desktop..? What the hell are they going to do..? Sell potato chips..? The only market left is Server market.. There too ARM is making its way and AMD themselves might consider moving in..

I’m not sure they will do much actually. They are focusing more and more on server and mobile processors.

The so-called death of Moore’s Law is just the result of lack of competition, which means Intel can drag their feet in the evolution in the PC CPU space. If this AMD competition does make a significant dent on Intel’s market share, they will turn the engine back on from dormant state.
