They're extremely cheap. You can buy hundreds of these off a Chinese bulk order site for like $5. Same with chargers, phone cases. It's all extremely bad quality, obviously.
Edit: Also, if this was originally shipped from China, it's even cheaper where produced/manufactured, these guys probably have stock sitting around.

I've seen headphones in those machines that take a few quarters and dispense a ball with a cheap little toy in it, $1 each. I can only imagine how awful they must sound.
