A patent map is a graphical model of patent visualisation. This

practice 'enables companies to identify the patents in a particulartechnology space, verify the characteristics of these patents, and ...identify the relationships among them, to see if there are any zonesof infringement.'[1] Patent mapping is also referred to as patentlandscaping.

欧洲专利局（EPO）的定义

Patent mapping is essentially the visualisation of the results ofstatistical analyses and text mining processes applied to patentdocuments. Patent mapping allows you to create a visualrepresentation of information from and about patent documents in away that is easy to understand. It is an excellent tool for assessinglarge sets of patent data. Using bibliographic data you can identifywhich technical fields particular applicants are active in, and howtheir filing patterns and IP portfolios change over time. It is alsopossible to find out which countries lead in which fields.
