两万亿的苹果丨双语精读

近日，苹果公司市值再次问鼎全球第一，距2万亿美元仅一步之遥。伴随苹果股价持续飙升，其首席执行官蒂姆·库克（Tim Cook）在执掌公司9年之后，净资产终超10亿美元，跻身十亿富翁俱乐部。

苹果股价上周上涨了近5%；美东时间周一（8月10日）收涨1.45%，最新市值达1.93万亿美元，距离2万亿美元里程碑仅有不到4%的空间。2011年10月，苹果联合创始人之一乔布斯去世时，公司市值仅为3500亿美元。

这句话的主干：Apple CEO Tim Cook has become a billionaire

billionaire billion+aire，看到billion我们就知道表示“十亿”，billionaire就表示“身家达到十亿的人”。文中直接用become a billionaire有些单调直接，卫报就用了这样的标题：

join the billionaire club 跻身十亿富豪俱乐部

而Bloomberg彭博社则用了这样的标题：

hit billionaire status 同样的意思，不同的表达。hit.....status = 达到,,,,的地位

在主干句后，接了一个as的引导的伴随状语：as he nears a decade at the helm of the world's most valuable company.

at the helm of helm 原指船的舵柄；舵轮，所以用at the helm of...... 表示“在舵轮前”，也就是指“开船，掌船”，从而引申出“掌管着.....”之意。相当于我们常用的 “be in charge of”“take charge of”，当然用“at the helm of”会读起来更生动一些，写作推荐使用。

这句话非常有意思，一般我们想说“执掌公司接近十年”，都会直接说:'He is in charge of the company for almost ten years. 在这里作者换了一个思路，把接近十年作为句子的谓语动作：he nears a decade 他已经接近了十年的时间。后接后置定语对decade进一步解释：at the helm of the world's most valuable company. 这样的行文思路比较少见，大家可以稍微了解一下。

很长的一句话，我们提取出主干成分：Apple’s performance has so far proved to be coronavirus-proof.

coronavirus-proof  由proof后缀构成的复合词，表示“防…的”，例如我们可以说：rainproof防雨的， bomb-proof aircraft 防弹飞机 那么coronavirus-proof=可以防新冠病毒的。

在这句话的主语Apple’s performance可以理解为“苹果公司的表现”，也就是指苹果公司的业绩情况，字面上来讲是说：苹果的业绩情况能防住新冠病毒的，也就是“苹果公司的经营业绩不受新冠病毒影响”。所以“-proof”结构我们可以非常灵活地应用为“不受,,,,影响的”，在写作中可以搭配不同的名词构成合成词进行灵活使用。例如：recession-proof shares 不受经济衰退影响的股票。

在主干句之后接的是两个并列的V-ing形式的非谓语结构，做伴随状语：

1. crushing Wall Street expectations in each of the last two quarters

2. pushing the company’s market value to new peaks

crush 压碎，压坏，crushing Wall Street expectations也就是“击碎了华尔街的预期”，也就是苹果公司的表现打破了华尔街对其原本的期望值。还记不记得之前讲过的“打破记录”也是用上这个词：crush the record.

push.....to new peak 从字面上理解：把.....推向新的高峰，相当于“reach new high”。除了peak这个比较常用的词汇之外，我们也可以用“pinnacle”，“reach the pinnacle”来表示“到达顶点”（写作推荐）

由于苹果的强劲表现，其股价创历史新高，市值升至 1.95 万亿美元，距离2万亿美元市值仅一步之遥。我们也可以用里程牌（milestone）来形容这一壮举：

Apple is on the cusp of stock-market milestone: a market value of nearly $2 trillion.

on the cusp of 是个固定短语，表示“处于某事即将发生变化的时刻”，所以这句话就翻译为：“苹果公司即将到达股票市场的一个新的里程牌 - 市值快要到达两万亿”。

尽管苹果在过去的十几年并没有推出能比iphone更具开创性的产品，但是在库克的领导下仍然实现了利润的飞跃，我们看看外媒是如何评价的：

While Apple over the past decade hasn’t revealed a new product as groundbreaking as the iPhone, the company still has thrived. hammer many other parts of the economy  hammer作名词指指锤子，铁锤，作动词可以表示“击打，重击”，所以hammer the economy就表示“对经济造成重创”。它其实相当于hit，hurt，只不过程度更大，打击的力度更强。

boon英文释义是something that is very helpful and makes life easier for you ，也就是某种对你有利，有帮助之物，所以我们可以用be a boon to......表示：对....有利，有益处的。例如：

A car is a real boon when you live in the country.

在郊外居住, 有辆汽车确实极为方便。

它的反义词是bane：造成困难，不快的事物。
