When I was a teenager (青少年) growing up in France, I wanted to leave school and have my own life (过自己的生活). The only way I could do this was to work in the local (当地的) paper factory (造纸厂) in my town, or get married (结婚). I was very nervous (紧张) when I told my father I wanted to leave school. I thought he would say, “No! You are going to college (上大学).” I was very surprised (吃惊的) when he said, “OK. Let’s go to the paper factory.”
Two days later (两天后), he took me to the factory. I imagined (想象) everyone to be friends, working together and having fun. I even imagined there would be music and singing. I guessed (猜) I had watched too many movies as a teenager.
When we arrived at the factory gate, my father spoke to the guard (门卫) and one minute later we were inside. I walked around the factory looking at the building, the workers and listening to the noise. It was terrible (可怕的; 糟糕的). I ran back to my father and said, “I want to go home.”
He asked me, “What do you think of the factory?”
“Too bad,” I answered.
“And marriage (结婚;婚姻) is even worse!” he said.
I went back to school the next day (第二天) thinking about studying hard so that I could get into a good college. I enjoyed studying English so I decided to major in (主修) languages (语言) at college.
Thanks to (归功于) my father and our visit to the paper factory, I now work at the United Nations (联合国) and my father is very proud of me (为我自豪). I married a very good man and my life is much better than it would have been working in the factory!
