Former governor Edwin Edwards is one of the most well-known figures in Louisiana history. At 85, he's making the leap into pop culture with a new reality show on the A&E network.
"The Governor's Wife" will follow the lives of Edwards, a Marksville native, and his wife, 34-year-old Alexandria native Trina Grimes Scott Edwards.
Alexandria filmmaker Shaun Sanghani confirmed Friday that he is working with A&E and Leftfield Pictures to produce the series. His company, SSS Entertainment produced "The Governor's Wife" and Sanghani is credited as the creator and executive producer.
"The Governor's Wife" will focus mainly on Trina Edwards. The series will include Edwin Edwards' daughters: Anna, a 62-year-old, four-time divorcee, and Victoria, whom A&E described in a news release as "a hardened 60-year-old ex-showgirl."
Trina has sons from a previous marriage, Logan, 15 and Trevor, 13.
Trina Edwards confirmed Friday in a Facebook exchange with The Associated Press that the series is being filmed.
The official description of the show reads, "Between school projects, running for president of the Homeowner's Association, fending off skeptics who think she's a gold digger, and thoughts of adding a baby of their own to the mix, the Edwards clan truly represent a new take on the modern family."
Edwards served four times as governor over three decades. He was convicted of bribery and extortion in 2001 and served eight years at federal penitentiary at Oakdale. He became penpals with Trina Scott during his prison stint, and the two married a year after his release.
This show will join the ranks of other Louisiana reality shows such as "Duck Dynasty," "Swamp People," "Bayou Billionaires," "Rat Bastards," "Cajun Pawn Stars" and "Sons of Guns."
"The Governor's Wife" is scheduled to premiere at 9 p.m. CT Feb. 27.
