Solution
This blue screen error is due to a downlevel version of HP Notebook Utilities software for Windows XP. Use the following steps to uninstall the current version and download and install the latest version.

Press and hold down the Power button for 5 seconds to turn off the computer. Then press and release the Power button to turn on the computer.
Press and hold the F8 key after the HP or Compaq logo screen appears, but before the Windows logo screen is displayed.
From the Windows Advanced Options Menu Select Safe Mode. When the Windows XP Desktop opens, Safe Mode will be displayed in the four corners.
Click Start then Control Panel
Select Add or Remove Programs.
Click on HP Notebook Utilities Software.
Select Remove.
Restart the computer by selecting Start then Shut Down. Select Restart form the drop down menu.
After the computer restarts in Windows, download and install the latest version of HP Notebook Utilities Software available on HPs Drivers and Downloads Web site.
Method 2: Reseating the RAM
Notebooks are designed so users can add additional memory using a simple Phillips screwdriver. After review the following steps, if you are not confident to perform the installation yourself, you may contact an HP authorized distributor for technical assistance.
NOTE: If someone other than HP installs or upgrades the RAM, any damage caused by the RAM and/or by the person when trying to install or upgrade the RAM is excluded from coverage under the product warranty. The customer assumes all risk and liability for damages for any such installation or upgrade.
NOTE: Some HP notebooks may have a secondary memory module located under the keyboard. For removal and replacement instructions pertaining to the second memory module contact HP service and support.
Use the following steps to remove and replace the memory modules:
Step 1 - Remove the battery
Slide and hold the battery release latch to the unlock position.
Use your finger to lift the battery up and out.
Step 2 - Remove the memory module

Push both tabs outward simultaneously to release the memory module.
Grasp the memory module by the edges and pull gently to remove it.
Align the keyed (notched) edge of the memory module with the keyed area in the expansion slot. Insert the memory module into the slot at a 45-degree angle until it is seated.
Push the front edge of the memory module down until the retention clips snap into place.
After reseating the memory module, replace the memory expansion cover and then replace the screw.
Step 3 - Replace the battery
Insert the battery into the notebook.
Push the battery into the base enclosure until you hear a click.
Connect the AC adapter and turn on the notebook.
After the memory is reseated, connect the AC adapter and turn on the notebook:
