POLICEMAN: Where do you think you are? On a race track? You must have been driving at seventy miles an hour.
GARY: I can't have been.

POLICEMAN: Didn't you see the speed limit?
GARY: I'm afraid I didn't, officer. I must have been dreaming.
ANN: He wasn't dreaming, officer. I was telling him to drive slowly.

POLICEMAN: I won't charge you this time. But you'd better not do it again!
GARY: Thank you. I'll certainly be more careful.
ANN: I told you to drive slowly, Gary.

1. You must have been driving at seventy miles an hour. 你一定是以每小时70英里的速度开车。
must have been driving…表示对过去正在进行的事情的推测。
mile英里，1英里≈1.6公里，70英里/小时≈113公里/小时。
2. I was doing eighty when I overtook you. 我是以每小时80英里的速度赶上你的。
这是一个时间状语从句，句中的doing是driving的意思，eighty后面省略了miles。I was doing eighty. 相当于是I was driving at eighty miles an hour. 80英里每小时的速度相当于是129公里每小时。
3. Didn't you see the speed limit? 难道你没有看到限速牌吗？
这个否定疑问句表示一种责备的语气。speed limit限速。如：
He broke the speed limit by driving his car at 130 kph.
他以130公里的时速开车，因而违章超速了。
4. That's why I didn't see the sign. 所以我才没看见那牌子。
这是一个表语从句，why I din't see the sign.这个句子充当表语部分。
表语从句就是用一个句子作为表语，我们来区别一下表语和表语从句。如：

a句中charge在这里表示罚款。charge还可以表示充电，负责。如

b句中的you'd better=you had better, 其后跟动词原形，用来建议在将来某一具体场合最好采取的动作，表示最好……。如文末的句子：
You'd better take my advice.
你最好听从我的劝告。
take one's advice是听从某人劝告的意思。如：
It never works to take his advice.
听他的劝告从来都没什么用。
You'd better的否定形式是直接在其后面加上not，You'd better not…，表示最好不要……。如：
You'd better not argue with your boss.
你最好不要跟你的老板争辩。
