The other day I was browsing through an English daily when some news caught my eye: On the eve of his retirement Bill Gates was reported to have declared that he would donate nearly all his money to charity and leave only a tiny fraction of his fortune to his children. I found the news really amazing and kept turning the matter over in my mind.
Bill Gates is worth about fifty-eight billion dollars. What prompted him to donate that much money? What does he plan to use such a huge amount of money for? According to the newspaper, he hopes to use the money to focus on eradicating AIDS and malaria. To conquer the two greatest diseases afflicting mankind calls for vast sums of money. No wonder he sees the need to contribute to such an ambitious task by doing whatever he can.
And why did he decide to leave no more than a small portion of his fortune to his children? Perhaps he thinks that if he left his children to live off the wealth he had accumulated, they might simply lidle away their lives. If, on the other hand, they have to earn their own living, they will be more likely to lead useful lives and might even finish up creating wonders to rival those of their father.
I think Bill Gates has made a wise decision. He has proved himself not just a great entrepreneur, but a great philanthropist as well.
