All that we are is the result of what we have thought: it is founded on our thoughts, it is made up of our thoughts. 诸法意先导，意主意造作。If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him, as the wheel follows the foot of the ox that draws the carriage. 若以染污意，或语或行业，是则苦随彼，如轮随兽足。2. All that we are is the result of what we have thought: it is founded on our thoughts, it is made up of our thoughts. 诸法意先导，意主意造作。If a man speaks or acts with a pure thought, happiness follows him, like a shadow that never leaves him. 若以清净意，或语或行业，是则乐随彼，如影不离形。3. 'He abused me, he beat me, he defeated me, he robbed me,'??in those who harbour such thoughts hatred will never cease. 『彼骂我打我，败我劫夺我』，若人怀此念，怨恨不能息。4. 'He abused me, he beat me, he defeated me, he robbed me,'??in those who do not harbour such thoughts hatred will cease. 『彼骂我打我，败我劫夺我』，若人舍此念，怨恨自平息。5. For hatred does not cease by hatred at any time: hatred ceases by love, this is an old rule. 在于世界中，从非怨止怨，唯以忍止怨；此古（圣常）法。6. The world does not know that we must all come to an end here;??but those who know it, their quarrels cease at once. 彼人不了悟：『我等将毁灭』。若彼等如此，则诤论自息。7. He who lives looking for pleasures only, his senses uncontrolled, immoderate in his food, idle, and weak, Mara (the tempter) will certainly overthrow him, as the wind throws down a weak tree. 唯求住净乐，不摄护诸根，饮食不知量，懈惰不精进，彼实为魔服，如风吹弱树。8. He who lives without looking for pleasures, his senses well controlled, moderate in his food, faithful and strong, him Mara will certainly not overthrow, any more than the wind throws down a rocky mountain. 愿求非乐住，善摄护诸根，饮食知节量，具信又精进，魔不能胜彼，如风吹石山。9. He who wishes to put on the yellow dress without having cleansed himself from sin, who disregards temperance and truth, is unworthy of the yellow dress. 若人穿袈裟，不离诸垢秽，无诚实克己，不应着袈裟。10. But he who has cleansed himself from sin, is well grounded in all virtues, and regards also temperance and truth, he is indeed worthy of the yellow dress. 若人离诸垢，能善持戒律，克己与诚实，彼应着袈裟。11. They who imagine truth in untruth, and see untruth in truth, never arrive at truth, but follow vain desires. 非真思真实，真实见非真，邪思惟境界，彼不达真实。12. They who know truth in truth, and untruth in untruth, arrive at truth, and follow true desires. 真实思真实，非真知非真，正思惟境界，彼能达真实。13. As rain breaks through an ill?thatched house, passion will break through an unreflecting mind. 如盖屋不密，必为雨漏浸，如是不修心，贪欲必漏人。14. As rain does not break through a well?thatched house, passion will not break through a well?reflecting mind. 如善密盖屋，不为雨漏浸，如是善修心，贪欲不漏人。15. The evil?doer mourns in this world, and he mourns in the next; he mourns in both. He mourns and suffers when he sees the evil of his own work. 现世此处悲，死后他处悲，作诸恶业者，两处俱忧悲，见自恶业已，他悲他苦恼。16. The virtuous man delights in this world, and he delights in the next; he delights in both. He delights and rejoices, when he sees the purity of his own work. 现世此处乐，死后他处乐，作诸善业者，两处俱受乐，见自善业已，他乐他极乐。17. The evil?doer suffers in this world, and he suffers in the next; he suffers in both. 现世此处苦，死后他处苦，作诸恶业者，两处俱受苦。He suffers when he thinks of the evil he has done; he suffers more when going on the evil path. （现）悲『我作恶』，堕恶趣更苦。18. The virtuous man is happy in this world, and he is happy in the next; he is happy in both. 现世此处喜，死后他处喜，修诸福业者，两处俱欢喜。He is happy when he thinks of the good he has done; he is still more happy when going on the good path. （现）喜『我修福』，生善趣更喜。19. The thoughtless man, even if he can recite a large portion (of the law), but is not a doer of it, has no share in the priesthood, but is like a cowherd counting the cows of others. 虽多诵经集，放逸而不行，如牧数他牛，自无沙门分。20.
