Dame Jillian Sackler International Artists Exhibition Program——Nicolas Herrera “Enchanted Nature Deforestation and the Environment”

Location:Arthur M. Sackler Museum of Art And Archaeology at Peking University

Date: September 29 — December 29, 2017

Opening Hours: 9:00 — 17:00 (Daily)

Ticket: Free

Introduction to the Exhibition

The exhibition consists of a set of 12 paintings and more than 61 drawings. It will be on display for three months at the Arthur M. Sackler Museum at Peking University.

The drawings and paintings derive from the amazing Amazon forest and the lamentable yet predictable consequences of modernity and progress. Thousands of acres of native trees are cut yearly, and this greatly affects the environment as it depletes the supply of oxygen for the world. A forest gives birth and protection to thousands of species of animals, birds and insects and deforestation destroys everything, which changes climate and ecosystems that sustain life.

As Nicolas Herrera said, in his hometown, Andean, forests populated with birds without pause or time that merge with the trees and sprout again from among the leaves; forests that cry for mercy saying no to deforestation, trees with singular beauty simulating people or fantastic beings dazzled by their wild magic. Works that exalt the importance of preserving the environment, living in harmony, with love, knowing that we are beings who inhabit the same space and depend on one another. Works created for reflection, meditation and respect for life.

“Prayer”

Aritist:Nicolas Herrera

Nicolas Herrera in his native Ecuador received numerous awards, including the prestigious Luis A. Martínez’ First National Printing Prize, Ambato and First National Printing Prize from Salón Mariano Aguilera, Quito, among others. By selling one painting at a time, he built his own museum in Ibarra to house and exhibit his paintings and sculptures and to exhibit works by other artists. Apart from numerous exhibitions within Ecuador, he has exhibited widely, including in the United States of America, Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland, Israel, Colombia, Panamá, Chile, Perú and Mexico.

From 61 drawings, 12 will be selected and painted on-site. Herrera arrived with pencil and brush in hand to work non-stop for one month. His style, composed with elements and bright color palette has dramatized the importance of preservation and conservation. These works include trees, birds and animals, but here trees become human figures, branches become arms, leaves become birds, animals or insects; it is all magical, composed to excite the viewer’s imagination about the environment.
