James is a 38 yr. old dwarf. After living most of his life with his mother he decides to move into a home for physically abnormal people. He is visited regularly by his brother MacDonald who in turn reports back to their mother, who is emotionally unable to visit James in the home. James tells MacDonald that he is happy at the home and that he is in love with another dwarf. MacDonald tells his wife that the place is like a zoo & he questions whether James can really be happy. The mother says that by dealing with dwarfs, James is hiding from the real world. She is a very unhappy woman who blames her dead husband for producing a dwarf son. MacDonald lies to his wife once a week and goes out by himself to bars. One evening he took his secretary out and she confessed that her constant smiling is from taking pills. During another visit to the dwarf house, MacDonald gives James a potion sent by their mother that should make him grow. James angrily breaks the bottle. James gets married. MacDonald realizes that the small bride is smiling beautifully--a smile no pills can produce.
