情态动词(Modal Verbs)
1. 通用原则
情态动词 后跟 动词原形(without ‘to’)
不随代词变化(I should, he should)
不需要助动词,直接可变为否定/疑问形式(he should not…/ Should he…?)
不和其它情态动词一起使用
2. 常见错误
I can to sing. → I can sing.
She could running fast. → She could run fast.
She cans swim. → She can swim.
Do you can do this? → Can you do this?
He does not may like it. → He may not like it.
He will can come tomorrow. → He can come tomorrow. / He will be able to come tomorrow.
以下就常见的用法进行了细分:
3. Can
(1) 能力 (ability)
I can dance.
He cannot dance. (写作)/ He can’t dance. (口语)
(2) 允许(permission)
You cannot smoke here.
4. Could
(1) can表示“能力”的过去式
I could not (couldn’t) sleep last night.
(2) 请求 (request)
Could we have a break please?
Could you help me please?
(3) 建议 (suggestion,表示肯定)
-What do you suggest for lunch?
-We could have salmon.
5. May
(1) 允许 (permission)
May I borrow the book?
(2) 很大的可能性 (a strong possibility in the present or future)
It may rain tonight.
She may not accept the offer.
6. Might
(1) 可能性 (a possibility in the present or future,可能性小于may)
It might rain tonight.
She might not accept the offer.
(2) 可能性 (过去时 a possibility in the past)
might have done
I might not have managed to convince her.
正式场合:
Request:
Could you open the door?
Asking for permission:
May I use the phone?
Suggestion:
We could meet next week.
Possibility:
It may/might/could happen again.
