I'd like to talk about a song called ‘The March of the Volunteers’ which is the national anthem of the People's Republic of China.
According to what I've learnt from my music teacher, the lyrics and music was composed by Tian Han who's a famous poet and musician. The song is about Chinese people standing up, fighting against fascism for freedom.
To be honest, I have no idea who's the singer. But when I was a student, I used to sing it everyday. Actually, I still remember that every morning, I stood on the playground, singing the song with hundreds of other students.
The atmosphere was very solemn. We put our emotion into it.
I don't really remember when I first listened to it. I think I probably was like 5 or 6 years old. My grandfather taught me how to sing it. He played the song on a cassette player. It's played for a couple of times. He taught me those words, then we sang together. I remember seeing tears welling up in his eyes. As a solider, he went through the darkest period of time in my country's history. The song means a lot to him.
Every time I heard it, I was deeply touched. I am so proud of my country.
I know it's not easy for us to have today's life. Our grandfathers fought so hard for it. Their stories were written in the lyrics. Their spirit will never die and live on forever.
That's why it's so special to me.
