The Irish lace and freeform often use the motif leaf. It is good to use for forming branches or lay figure ornament. It’s simplicity and the way of crocheting can change the direction of the bending of the leaf, which in turn allows to make any conceived pattern.
Let us consider how to crochet the simple straight leaf:
1.The work begins with the chain foundation of 13 chains.
2. Miss 2 chains and work 2 dc/sc in next 2 chains
3. Work in next 2 chains - 2 h.tr / h.dc.
4. Work in next 2 chains - 2 tr/dc.
5. Work in next 4 chains - 4 d.tr/ tr.
6. Work 6 d.tr/ tr in last chain of chain foundation.
7. Continue to work on opposite side. Work in next 4 chains - 4 d.tr/ tr.
8. Work in next 2 chains - 2 tr/dc.
9. Work in next 2 chains - 2 h.tr / h.dc.
10. Work in next 2 chains - 2 dc/sc.
11. For the end of the row make sl.st. in chain.
For volume and a ribbed edge can be used 1 row of reverse dc/ sc.
12. For this make 1 turning chain and insert the hook into the second stitch to right of hook, yarn over hook and draw through a loop ( 2 loops on hook), yarn over hook and draw through 2 loops on hook (1 loop remains on hook). Continue work in this manner until you get the ribbed edge around all leaf.
In order to give naturalness to leaf, you can crochet in the middle of the leaf vein. For this use 'chain stitch' through the pattern.
13. Insert hook above into chain of chain foundation (the hole between first and parallel dc/sc). Working thread is under leaf.
14. Yarn over and draw through the leaf and one loop on hook.
15. Continue work in this manner inserting the hook into each chain of chain foundation (the hole between parallel stitches).
16. At the end release a hook from the loop and insert hook in last chain stitch from back.
17. Draw a loop through pattern.
18. Cut the thread and draw through a loop. Fasten the thread.
