How Important Is Pcb Design?

First of all for all of the people who are not familiar with one of these then they will need to look this up and find out what exactly these little things do. A PCB is an acronym which stands for printed circuit board and each one can be found in a computer. The PCB is used to support and connect, mechanically and electrically, all electronic components using a conductive pathway. These are etched from copper sheets that are laminated onto a non conductive material.

These are usually rugged in appearance, cheap to purchase and produce, and extremely reliable. However these do require much more effort in the designing of it and higher initial costing than any other circuits such as wire-wrapped or point-to-point constructed circuits. They do calculate to be cheaper to use, faster and better quality for high volume production. The IPC organization set the standard for the designing of PCB, to which most electronic industry's specialising in PCB design follow when producing them.

A typical PCB design consists of copper etching and patterning. A majority of the boards are made up of bonding a layer of copper over the conductive substrate; this can be done on both sides essentially to create a blank PCB. Then the unwanted copper is removed after having applied a temporary mask (though etching), leaving behind only the wanted copper traces. Some PCBs are made by adding traces onto the substrate directly by a process called multiple electroplating steps.

The copper can be removed by silk screen printing, which protects the wanted copper, with further etching removing unwanted copper. Photoengraving is also another method used which uses a photomask and a chemical based etching to remove the copper; another form could be through PCB milling which uses a two or three axis mechanical milling system that mill away the copper from the substrate.

Often some PCBs have trace layers in the PCB and are referred to as multi-layer PCBs, which are formed by bonding separately etched boards together that are thin and light in weight.

A PCB design is typically completed through a number of methods. The first being through schematic captures though an EDA tool. Decisions over the card dimensions and template are made based on the required circuitry is determined. Often the decisions over heat sinks and fixed components may be required as well. Stack layers are also considered which may consist of 4 to 12 layers depending upon how complex the design is.

When designing a PCB it is important to consider every element of the board, taking time over the layout and patterning. Every inch of the board must be perfectly constructed in order for it to run smoothly and without any problems.
