"Because of a possible government shutdown, the Department of State must cancel 'Passport Day in the USA,' which had been scheduled for Saturday, April 9, 2011," said a notice from the U.S. State Department, forwarded by Howard Josephs of the Los Angeles Passport Agency.
"Passport Day in the USA" is intended to give people one day a year when they could apply for a passport without making an appointment.
In the annual event, passport agencies and participating passport acceptance facilities nationwide open their doors for U.S. citizens to receive passport services to help applicants take care of any passport needs.
It was unclear if a similar event would be rescheduled.
U.S. House Speaker John Boehner announced Friday night that Republicans has reached a last minute spending deal with the White House and Congressional Democrats, averting an ugly government shutdown one hour before the current stopgap measure expires.
