"In South China Sea issue, China's maritime strategy is turning from maintaining stability to safeguarding sovereignty," said Jin Canrong, associate dean of international studies’school at Renmin University of China.
In recent 30 years China’s maritime strategy was guided by the principle of sovereignty belonging to China, putting aside dispute and seeking joint exploitation. This principle, which was very effective in the past and created a stable circumstance for China’s rapid economic development, is now confronting new challenges.
Considering the recent moves of Chinese government, China’s maritime strategy is shifting, Jin said. In the past the main target of China’s marine strategy is maintaining stability. But in 2012 since the Huangyan Island Dispute happened, China has paid more attention to safeguarding its maritime sovereignty.
