An irrigation project that was invested in by the government in Central China's Henan province has been abandoned after completion because of functional flaws, Henan Daily reported.

The irrigation station, in a village of Huaibin county, was constructed in September 2010 at a total cost of 14.8 million yuan ($2.39 million). However, the local farmers were not able to pump water from the irrigation station after the project was finished.

Drought conditions last year killed crops in seven villages near the irrigation station, yet the farmers could not get a drop of water from the irrigation facility, said the report.

The water authority in Huaibin county said that the irrigation station is up to standards and could function well under normal weather conditions.

The official statement failed to appease the farmers, since they don't need to irrigate their crops under normal weather conditions, the report said.
