The Hong Kong government said on Tuesday that the Task Force on Constitutional Development has submitted a report on the recent community and political situation in Hong Kong to the State Council's Hong Kong & Macao Affairs Office.

The report, submitted outside the "five-step" constitutional process, reflects truthfully the events related to constitutional development, and opinions and aspirations expressed by different sectors of the community from Aug. 31 to Dec. 15 last year in Hong Kong, according to the government's Information Services Department.

The report covers relevant events and views obtained from public sources to the best of the government's knowledge, including events relating to constitutional development during the report period; relevant statements made by various groups; and relevant opinion polls conducted by various organizations, said the Information Services Department.

Earlier, there were suggestions that the government could relay to the Central Authorities the opinions of different sectors of the community since the end of August last year regarding the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee's decision on issues related to selecting the Chief Executive by universal suffrage and the method for forming the Legislative Council in 2016, as well as constitutional development in future.

The government noted that constitutional development has all along been an extremely controversial issue.
