Beijing entered quickly into the aging society and one in five Beijingers is aged over 60, according to the 2014 Health White Paper released on Tuesday.
The paper revealed that in 2014, the average life expectancy of Beijing residents reached 81.81,0.30 years more than 2013. The life expectancy for men is 79.73, that for women is 83.96.
The report said that 3 million Beijing residents are aged over 60, accounting for 22.6 percent of the total population; 2 million are aged over 65, 15.3 percent of the population, which means one in five Beijingers is over 60.
The Health White Paper revealed that chronic diseases are still the main threat to the residents' health. The top three causes of death were cancer, heart disease and cerebrovascular disease, accounting for 73.2 percent of all death causes. Cancer had been the No. 1 killer of Beijingers for eight consecutive years. 41,272 cancer cases were reported in Beijing in 2013, which means 113 Beijingers were newly diagnosed with cancer every day.
