NPC deputy dedicated to caring for children paid the ultimate price for helping

Peng Weiping is a villager in Zhangchang village, Gaolou township, Suzhou in east China's Anhui province.

Peng was about six months pregnant with twins and home alone on June 6, 2012 when she heard screams for help. She went to the source of the screams and saw a child struggling in a pond. She jumped into the two-meter deep pond without a second thought.

Peng Weiping lifted the child up, got her head down and forced the water out of her mouth. Peng ended up staying in the water for more than 10 minutes before villagers succeeded in pulling them out of pond.

After she was dragged out of the pond, Peng, trembling all over, was helped to her feet by two local villagers.

Due to the incident, one of her unborn twins did not survive while the other suffered from health problems.

Peng Weiping said that she thought of her unborn child during the past three years, but she never regretted what she did that day.

Peng Weiping became a National People's Congress deputy in 2013 and presented her first proposal on the security of children who have been left behind in rural areas by parents who have gone to cities to work. From then on, she has taken part in activities aiming at taking care of China’s left-behind children. She has helped more than 300 left-behind children in the past three years.

Peng Weiping helped fund the construction of a road of more than 3,000 meters long for the village and won the 5th National Moral Model award on Aug.13, 2015.
