A Horrible Earthquake
可怕的地震
Dirtywater rose in wells and canals before the earthquake. But no one judged that an earthquake was coming. Suddenly, everything shook. It seemed as ifthe world was at an end.Millions ofbrickhouses and a number ofdamswere destroyed. Railway tracks becameuselessbars. Pipes in mines burstand let out smellysteam. Huge cracks trappedcyclistseverywhere.
The next day, this eventwas the headlineor main titleof all newspapers. With the reporters giving an outlineof the disaster, the whole nationwas shocked by the damageand the victim’sextremesuffering. People were moved when they read that the survivorscomforted each other by saying “Congratulations! You survived!”. So they not only expressed their sympathysincerely, but also organized together to help the victims right away. The injured wererescued and the dead were buried. The frightened survivors were dug outfrom under the ruins and were offered shelter, fresh water and electricity. Thanks to people’shelp, the loss was minimized.

As the founderof the republic, the presidenthad many good qualities. Before coming topower, he was a generouslawyer. He was willing to selflesslyhelp everyone who turned tohim. He accepted no feeto offer legal guidanceand opinionsto those who were out of workor uneducated. Later, believing all mankindto be equal, he devotedhimself to stopping theunfairanti-black laws. He set upthe Black Youth Leagueand was voted to be the leader. However,though he kept peacefulprinciples without violenceand terror, his meanenemies stillblew uphis house and attacked his relatives, and he himself couldn’t escapebeing sentenced to30 years in prison.
Not fearing of the prison guards’ cruelty, he kept activeand begged no mercy from them.As a matter of fact, he was always hopefuland never lost heartduring the stage even though he was in trouble.
Finally, people rewarded him with the leader’s position and a gold blanket.

Inorder toremovepeople’s doubt, a team of no less than20 people carried outaninformalinvestigation.The evidences they found showed that a maidtook the vase apartand asked a sailorto sinkit in a localwell. She never gave away the secret even under the cruel trialof the enemies who were in search oftreasures.
It is worthgiving this brave maid a fortune in return.
