我们当然知道，从句中what is/was the matter (with sb)的对应含义可以是“出了什么事，怎么了”，其中的the matter在用法和语义上，可以相当于形容词的wrong，通常在任何时候what is/was the matter (with sb)这个语序都不做改变，这不仅是日常英语交流中的实用句式，也是我们目前中高考英语（升学考试）的一个重要考查的知识点。
常见的其他与the matter相关的句式搭配有…something the matter, anything the matter, nothing the matter，对应的含义上相当于something wrong, anything wrong, nothing wrong。例如：
1)There is nothing the matter with the machine. 相当于
There is nothing wrong with the machine.
2)What’s the matter with you? 相当于
What’s wrong with you?
3)There is something the matter with the clock. 相当于
There is something wrong with the clock. 或
Something is the matter with the clock. 或

同时我们也要知道从句中what the matter was这个语序对应的英语也是存在成立的，我们不能因为常常考查从句中what is/was the matter这个句式，就随意地把what the matter was视为不存在、不成立（甚至有的老师讲到把what the matter was这个结构——看作不成立，而舍弃），这是对学习者英语的理解、应用、掌握有害的，一方面隔裂了考试英语与现实日常英语的关系，另一方面在外延与内涵两方面削弱缩小了英语这一门语言的理解，致使学生对真实事物、外部世界的理解更加片面，而学习者误以为世界就是那个“小”世界。
具体地说从句中的what the matter was的汉语含义可以是两个层面：
第一：出了什么事，怎么了，怎么回事，含义上等同于what was the matter；
第二：那物质/那材料/那内容是什么。
我们知道：出了什么事，怎么了，怎么回事，英语是what was the matter。

2）matter（前接the，常后接with）the thing that is amiss麻烦事；毛病；差错（what’s the matter?出什么事了？）

what’s the mater有两种译法：
如果药询问有关的人或物时，the matter相当于wrong（毛病，故障），意为“出了什么事”，是习惯用语。另外，matter还可作“物质”解，是不可数名词。例如
What’s the matter with that boy? 那男孩出了什么事？
What’s the matter with your leg? 你的腿怎么了？
What’s the matter in the bottle?瓶里装的是什么物质？

the matter作“困难”，“麻烦”，“失常的事”等解。例如：
What is the matter? 和The matter with us is that we haven’t enough time.
但the matter习惯上竟被用作形容词，作“失常的”解。例如：
There is something the matter with him. (他有些失常。) 和There is nothing the matter with the machine. (这机器没有毛病。)注意the matter后面用with。
the matter既然有形容词性质，所以What is the matter?里的what通常被看作主语，而且习惯说He asked me what was the matter，不说He asked me what the matter was。
He asked me what the matter was的意思通常是“他问我那物质是什么”或“他问我那件事是什么”。
