I am extremely knowledgeable about DC, so feel free to ask any questions about the city and what to do. My friends at work call me Mr. DC and the office Concierge. :) I am also a former Marriott Hotel employee and front desk manager.
Capitol Hill, in addition to being a metonym for the United States Congress, is the largest historic residential neighborhood in Washington, D.C., stretching easterly in front of the United States Capitol along wide avenues. It is one of the oldest residential neighborhoods in Washington, D.C.As a geographic feature, Capitol Hill rises near the center of the District of Columbia and extends eastward. Pierre L'Enfant, as he began to develop his plan for the new Federal City in 1791, chose to locate the 'Congress House' on the crest of the hill, facing the city, a site that L'Enfant characterized as a 'pedestal waiting for a monument.'The Capitol Hill neighborhood today straddles two quadrants of the city, Southeast and Northeast, and a large portion of it is now designated as the Capitol Hill Historic District. The name Capitol Hill is often used to refer to both the historic district and to the larger neighborhood around it. To the east of Capitol Hill lies the Anacostia River, to the north is the H Street corridor, to the south are the Southeast/Southwest Freeway and the Washington Navy Yard, and to the west are the National Mall and the city's central business district. One block to Potomac Ave. Metro StopOne block to DC metro Bus StopOne block to DC Bike rental pavilion One block to Safeway grocery storeTwo blocks to Harris Teeter grocery storeShort walk to Eastern MarketTwo blocks to Jenkins RowAs to how to get to the apartment, you enter from 16th street SE side (which is the back of the main house which is 1602 Potomac Ave. SE Washington, DC 20003). The door to the apartment faces 16th Street, SE which you can see once you open up the gate that leads to the back yard which is a brick patio that is enclosed by an 8-foot wooden stockade fence. You will see the wooden gate/door in between two wooden shed looking structures. The address (1602 Potomac Ave., SE) is posted high up on the right side garage. You then enter though that gate/door gate which leads into the enclosed backyard. Once you enter, you will see the door straight ahead of you with a sign above it that says 1602 Potomac Ave., SE, Unit B, you then walk down three steps. Once you walk down the steps you will see the front door, its burgundy with window panes. The Yale electronic lock on the door activates when you cover the video screen over with your hand. It lights up and you then type in the code, which I will provide to you before check-in and you then hit the asterisk (*) button and this will unlock the door. Apartment has DirectTV satellite, DVD player and some good DC tourist DVD's for you to watch. The area is very safe; the apartment is located in SE Capitol Hill behind the Capitol Building. DC does not enforce parking over the weekends. So Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays is open parking in most residential areas. If you plan to stay during the week, I charge a $30 service fee to get a city parking permit for the vehicle, which is good for up to two weeks. The area is very green and gives the impression of almost being in the suburbs from all the tall trees, the grass yards and parks. The area’s green feel and its being one of the oldest neighborhoods in DC lend a very nineteenth century atmosphere to the neighborhood. Although the apartment and home are completely newly remodeled, the basic structure is over one hundred years old. The Hill is the largest and oldest historical residential neighborhood in Washington, D.C., stretching easterly in front of the United States Capitol along very wide avenues. Because of the very nature of the neighborhood, there is plenty of parking right outside the apartment door which faces 16th Street SE and around both corners along Potomac Ave. and E Street and G street. You will find the area very convenient with easy parking, only about a block to the Metro, only a few minutes’ walk to grocery stores, restaurants and bars, and less than a ten minute walk to Eastern Market and Barracks Row.
