The evolution of man is very slow. The instinctive reactions of the body are very similar to those of the cave man. In a threatening situation the body still reacts by producing adrenaline to increase muscular activity and physical strength. This reaction makes it possible to fight in defense in a more effective way, or to quickly run away from a fearful situation. The difference is that today we don't have to fight dinosaurs of saber-toothed tigers. Instead, the treats and aggravations experienced often seem to appear from within, leaving us incapable of dealing with the situation by physical action. The energy produced by the experienced emotion will instead be contained in the body. In the long term this repeated cycle of unexpressed emotional turmoil is very damaging to the body.


人类的进化是非常缓慢的,身体的本能反应与洞穴人很相似。在受到威胁的情况下,身体仍然会通过产生肾上腺素来增加肌肉活力和体能。这种反应可能会以更有效的方式来进行战斗防御,或者是更快速的从可怕的情况中逃离。不同之处在于,今天的我们不必再对抗剑齿虎恐龙。相反,我们所经历的治疗和病情恶化似乎常常从内部出现,让我们无法通过身体行动来处理这种情况。经历丰富的情感所产生的能量会抑制在体内。长此以往,这种反复循环的没有表现出来的情绪紊乱对身体的伤害是非常大的。


A person of today has completely different fears to fight compared to the rough times experienced as a caveman. The fears experienced nowadays mostly deal with how we see ourselves and our situations. The greatest fear most of us hold is the fear of being inadequate. We fear we are not good enough. We fear being a failure unable to live up to expectations and demands put uponus. Often these sometimes impossible expectations are made by ourselves--for ourselves. And woe betides us if we do not live up to the demands we have created. Nobody is as harsh and as judgmental, or vriticizes as hard, as oneself when judging one's own appearance and actions. 


与作为洞穴人所经历的困难时期相比,当今的人有着完全不同的恐惧心理。现在所经历的恐惧主要在于我们如何看待自己以及我们的处境。我们大多数人最害怕的是自己的不足。我们害怕自己不够好;我们害怕成为一个无法达到期望和要求的失败者。通常这些有时无法实现的期望都是我们自己为自己制造而来的。如果我们辜负了自己创造的要求,我们会因此而感到悲哀。当一个人在评判自己的外表和行为的时,没有人比自己更残酷、更苛刻、更严厉的自我批评。
