Mosquitos and black flies are a particular nuisance in Maine. Whether you're barbecuing, hiking, or simply sitting on your porch reading the newspaper, these little pests will find and annoy you. Luckily, there are many ways you can repel these bugs from your person and your yard. Go with some of these natural bug repellant methods so you can keep bugs off while staying environmentally friendly.

For You

• Apple Cider Vinegar is great for your body and for repelling bugs. Drinking a shot of ACV daily has proven health benefits, and will give you an undesirable body odor that will repel bugs. Don't worry, this odor isn't detected by humans!

• Burning sage or rosemary repels mosquitoes – and makes a lovely scented incense.

• Rub vanilla extract, lavender essential oil, or pine extract onto your skin. It repels biting black flies and mosquitoes.

For Your Yard

• Herbs like basil, coriander, and anise planted in a garden are thought to repel pests. Plant them in the borders of your yard, or line your porch with flower boxes filled with these plants. Garlic plants may work, as well.

• Eliminate standing water sources! Areas like stagnant puddles, buckets full of water, and empty plant pots are perfect breeding grounds for flies and mosquitoes.

• Adding citronella extract to exterior house paint or deck paint will repel bugs for a time. Spritz essential oil mixtures of herbs like lemongrass, cedarwood, and mint around the home, or look for candles that contain these oils.
