As a mom living on the rainy west coast I’m well accustomed to getting the kids geared up in their Muddy Buddies and heading outside during our rainy season aka – October – April. However, some days pushing a soggy stroller and dealing with muddy boots simply doesn’t appeal and I have to find some kid friendly indoor activities.
Having recently returned to South Surrey White Rock I needed some inspiration to get out of the house with my 1&3 year old so I asked the awesome community of South Surrey White Rock moms in the South Rock Moms Facebook group for their suggestions and here they are!
Offering 5 & 10 pin bowling Sandcastle Lanes is a great family activity. Kids under 5 will love 5 pin bowling as the balls are smaller, bumpers are in the gutters and there’s a stand which allows the little’s to aim and bowl right down the middle. Plus, the bowling alley serves beer and wine and has a full kitchen attached making it a great place to stop for lunch.
The Urban Safari Rescue Society is a non-profit society dedicated to the rescue and care of exotic animals. Currently they have 350 rescued and unwanted exotic animals, everything from insects to pigs and more! They’re open to the public Monday, Thursday & Friday allowing kids the opportunity to get up close to animals they may have never seen or heard of before.
Dining out with kids can be stressful unless you head to the Wooden Spoon White Rock & South Surrey’s only restaurant with a dedicated kids play room! Designed to entertain kids of all ages there’s a big screen TV connected to Apple TV, a play kitchen and countless other toys. The play area is set away from the dining area which can be good and bad depending on your child. If you have a runner you’ll definitely want to stay close so be sure to request the back booth next to the play area.
Aside from providing the kids a fun place to play the Wooden Spoon is one of the best and most popular restaurants in the community. There’s nothing on their menu I haven’t loved (especially if you start with the Mom’s Breakfast) and my husband swears the spoon Burger is one of the best burgers he has ever had. The Wooden Spoon is a true win/win for parents and kids – if you go there make sure to tell them South Rock Buzz sent ya!
Living in White Rock with a 3 year old obsessed with trains I’ve learned the best chance to guarantee a train sighting is to watch for the Amtrak Cascades which runs past White Rock Beach 4 times a day. Below are the approximate times you can catch the Amtrak:
Whitby’s is a great spot for train spotting as it has a perfect view of the train passing by. It’s also a very spacious cafe with room for kids to roam a little bit and they serve baked goods and of course coffee.
My 3 year old recently attended a birthday party at White Rock Gymnastics and it was clearly one of the best days of his life (as evidenced in the picture). Their daily drop in is a great way to let your little use gymnastics equipment including trampolines, tumbling mats, a foam pit and more without committing to a gymnastics program. Parent supervision is required but staff are on hand to watch and interact.
The ladies at Semiahmoo Family Place work hard to create a positive fun environment for kids and parents to connect. Located in what used to be East Kensington Prairie Elementary they’ve converted one of the classrooms into a great indoor play space full of toys for every type of child including train sets, lego, play doh and more!
Each day of the week there’s a different activity whether it’s access to the gym or field/courtyard or music with Nelson who brings his guitar and entertains the kids with sing a longs and story time.
Family Place also offers Baby Place a drop in program for babies 0-18 months Tues – Thurs from 12-2 and Mini-Mother Goose.
Strong Start is a free drop in program available across BC which provides children 0-5 early learning opportunities. Strong Start is a great way to prepare children for learning with activities including Circle time, Snack time, Story time, Gym Time and Goodbye Time. This is a great chance for children to interact with other children and also for parents to earn skills in helping foster healthy learning in their child.
The South Surrey Rec Centre Stay & Play is the perfect space to let your little one run around and burn off some energy. With various toys, balls and general gym equipment available for kids to play with you can head to Stay & Play and know your odds of having a good afternoon nap are high!
The newest pool in Surrey the Grandview Aquatic Centre was designed with families in mind. There’s a shallow area perfect for the little ones to sit in safely and splash around. There’s also a lazy river and lots of pool space for parents and kids to use depending on their skill level.
Help your little find their creative side with L’Atelier d”Alexandra! Be sure to dress for mess and expect to paint, draw and more during the drop in family session. Siblings are welcome though activities are geared for children 12 months !
The castle at Semiahmoo Mall is one of the only indoor playgrounds in South Surrey/ White Rock. Like Spiritual Ingredients the space is small but there is a slide along with a few other play items for kids to climb on. There’s also a Murchie’s and a Blenz in the mall for your coffee/tea fix and the Castle is positioned right next to the food court making it a great spot to grab lunch.
Located at White Rock’s east beach Spiritual Ingredients bakery and coffee shop is an All-Natural bakery with a small gated space filled with toys for young kids to play with. While the play space does not rival other play cafes like Kids Play or Circus, it is steps from the beach allowing you to dodge rain drops. Plus, their house made French macarons paired with a latte provide a heavenly 5 minutes of peace for parents.
Many of us grew up in McDonald’s Play Places whipping play balls with a side of fries at each other. In South Surrey White Rock the ‘up-town” McDonalds is the only one with a play structure. It’s smaller then most Play Places but it’s easily accessible for kids who can crawl. It’s all on one level and with only two exits it makes it easy for parents to sit back and enjoy your Big Mac (or Egg McMuffin!) while the kids chase each other around.
