表像系动词: seem look appear
三者均属于表示状态的连系动词,都有“好像”、“似乎”的意思。区别如下:
1.seem 侧重指事实上似乎是那样的,根据某种迹象作出的推断,也不一定是事实。
look 指视觉印象,指看起来似乎如此;
appear 指从表面上看似乎如此,但有时并非如此。
(1)They seemed tired and unhappy when they got home. 他们到家时似乎又累又不高兴
(2)Be careful! The newly [ˈnju:li] 最近waxed[wæks]给…打蜡
floor looks very slippery[ˈslɪpəri]滑溜的 .
小心点!这新打蜡的地板看起来很滑。
(3)She appears quite old. 她显得很老。
2.三者均可后接不定式,但 look 之后一般只限于 to be
(且较少见):
(1)The man seems / appears / looks to be very tired. 那人好像很疲劳。
(2)He seemed / appeared to have met her before.
他以前似乎见过她。
/He seems to have seen her before.
(3)He seems [appears, looks] to be very tired.
他好像很累了。
(4)He seems [appears] to have traveled a lot.
他似乎去过不少地方。
(5)This seems to be a happy solution.
这似乎是一个理想的解决办法。
但是不说He looks to have traveled a lot.
3.look, seem 之后可接like短语,但 appear 之后一般不能.
(1)You look like your father. 你看起来像你父亲。
(2)It seemed like a disaster[dɪˈzɑ:stə(r)]灾难
at the time当时. 在当时就好像是一场灾难。
(3)He just looks like his brother.
他的模样就像他的哥哥。
(4)He seems like a fool. 他看起来像个傻瓜。
4.用于进行时态的问题
appear 和seem不用于进行时态,但look有时可这样用(尽管较少见):(2)It seems /appears that he is very tired.
他似乎很累了。
(3)It seemed / as if好像, 似乎/ though [ðəʊ]虽然 the day would never end. 似乎这一天永远不会结束。
(4)It looked as if he had been ill.
他看起来像是生过病。
(5)It seems / appears that he is very rich[rɪtʃ]富有的.
他似乎很富有。
为避免重复,appear和seem后接的 that 从句有时可用so或 not代替。
(1)---Is he an honest [ˈɒnɪst]诚实的 man ?
他是诚实的人吗?
--- It seems / appears so / not.
似乎是 / 不是。
(2) ---Is he reliable? 他可靠吗?
seem
1. 用作连系动词,表示“似乎”“好像”,其后用作表语的可以是名词、形容词、介词短语、不定式、分词等。如:
He seems quite happy. 他看来很快活。
That seems not a bad idea. 这似乎是一个不坏的主意。
You seem out of temper today. 你今天情绪似乎不大好。
His first memories seemed connected with work. 他最早的记忆似乎和工作有关。
后接不定式时,不定式根据情况可以是一般式,也可以是进行式或完成式等。如:
She seems to be crying. 她好像在哭。
He didn’t seem to have changed much. 他似乎没多大变化。
注意:seem 后可接不定式,但通常不接动名词。
2. 在 it seems 后可接 as if 从句或 that 从句。如:
It seems that he is living in the area. 他似乎就住在这一带。
It seems as if everybody knew except me. 好像除我之外其他人都知道了。
后接 that 从句时,有时可用 so, not 代之。如:
A:Does he know her? 他认识她吗?
B:It seems so (not). 好像是认识(不认识)。
3. 用作seem like,其中的like通常为介词,其后接名词或代词。如:
It seems like yesterday. 这仿佛是昨天发生的事。
It seems like the answer to my problem. 它似乎是我问题的答案。
但在非正式文体中,也可后接句子。如:
It seems like the year flies by. 一年好像飞逝般过去。
It seems like their marriage is over. 看起来他们的婚姻结束了。
4. 有时还可用于 there seems (to be)。如:
There seems (to be) something wrong with it. 好像有什么问题。
There seems to be a mistake in these figures. 这些数字中好像有个错误。
5. 比较以下同义句型:
It seems that he has a lot of money.=He seems to have a lot of money. 他似乎很有钱。
appear的用法
appear用作连系动词,其意为“似乎”“好像”,其后的表语可以是:
■不定式
(1)He appeared to be talking to himself.
他仿佛在跟自己讲话。/他似乎在自言自语。
(2)She didn’t appear to know anything about it.
她似乎对此一无所知。
(3)They appeared to be satisfied [ˈsætɪsfaɪd]满意的
with the result [rɪˈzʌlt]结果 .
他们似乎对结果感到满意。
(4)They aren’t as clever[ˈklevə(r)]聪明的 as they
appear to be.
他们并不像他们看起来那样聪明。
(5)There appears to be little enthusiasm[ɪnˈθju:ziæzəm]
热情 for your idea. 对你的想法似乎没有什么热情。
(6)There seems to be something wrong here.
这儿好像有点不大对劲。/这里好像有什么问题。
■形容词
(1)He appeared quite well. 他显得身体相当好。
(2)He appears quite rich 他似乎相当富有。
(3)To compromise[ˈkɒmprəmaɪz]妥协 appears advisable
[ədˈvaɪzəbl]明智的.
妥协似乎是明智之举./看来以妥协为好。
/Compromise seems wise [waɪz]明智的.
■名词
(1)He didn’t want to appear a fool.
他不想显得像个傻瓜。
(2)It appears a true story. 这似乎是一件真事。
■从句
(1)It appears that he forgot[fəˈgɒt]忘记 to sign[saɪn]
签名 the letter. 他似乎忘记在信上署名了。
(2)It appears (that) the plane did not land[lænd]
土地,降临in Rome. 似乎飞机并未在罗马着陆。
