为什么“土木工程”是 civil engineering？

不少人看到“土木工程”被翻译成 civil engineering 而感到疑惑，因为 civil 最常见的含义是“公民的；文明的”。

但在 civil engineering 里，civil 的含义其实是“民用的”。也就是说，civil engineering 其实是“民用工程”。

而“土木工程”和 civil engineering 在中英文里的定义也基本一致。

根据《现代汉语词典（第6版）》：

土木工程：房屋、道路、桥梁、海港等工程的统称。

根据《柯林斯》：

Civil engineering is the planning, design, and building of roads, bridges, harbours, and public buildings.

民用 vs 军用

和“民用”相对的是“军用”，而维基百科里的这句话也说明了与 civil engineering 相对应的就是 military engineering。

In the 18th century, the term civil engineering was coined to incorporate all things civilian as opposed to military engineering. 18世纪的时候，人们创造了 civil engineering 这个术语用以综合描述民用的（工程项目），和 military engineering 相对应。
