很多人一看到 fly 这个单词，都会下意识地跟“飞行”联系在一起。

飞、飞行、会飞行的动物，比如苍蝇等等......

但如果你一直陷入这种定势思维，就容易在和老外的聊天中闹误会。就像是今天要学的，on the fly 就不是指这个人“在飞机上”，而是说ta匆匆忙忙、毫无计划地做某事。

01.

良好的开端

A flying start

A very good start to something, quickly making good progress. 

• She's got off to a flying start in her new job.
  她在新工作中有了一个良好的开端。

• He got off to a flying start in the race.
  他在比赛一开始就表现出色。
  

02.

没有计划做某事

On the fly

Without previous planning; you are doing it at the same time as your action is in progress.

• I don't have enough time to prepare, so I guess I’ll just have to do in on the fly.

  我没有足够的时间准备，我想我只能匆匆忙忙地做了。

• You know, his speeches are much better when he does them on the fly.
  你知道，如果他好好准备的话，他的演讲会更好。

勃然大怒

Fly off the handle/fly into a rage

To react in a very angry way to something that someone says or does.

• He’s extremely irritable, and he flies off the handle at the slightest thing.

  他非常暴躁，一点小事就发火。

• He flew into a rage when I told him you were not giving his money back.
  当我告诉他你不还他的钱时，他勃然大怒。

Fly in the face of sth

To completely oppose what seems sensible or normal.

• This is an argument that seems to fly in the face of common sense.

• It flies in the face of everything I have been taught.

Fly-by-night

A person or company as fly-by-night means they are unreliable and irresponsible, and their work is probably not of good quality. 

• You can’t trust that company, because they’re a fly-by-night operation.

  你不能相信那家公司，因为他们是一个不可靠的公司。

• I bought this watch from a fly-by-night shop, and it broke within three weeks.

  我从一家不靠谱的店买了这块手表，不到三周就坏了。

Fly on the wall

You would like to hear what will be said or see what will happen while not being noticed. 

• I’d like to be a fly on the wall for that conversation.

  为了那场谈话，我愿意变成隐形人。

• I’d love to be a fly on the wall when those two get home!

  当他们两个人回家时，我真想变成隐形人。

it’ll/that’ll never fly - it will not succeed 

• You can suggest a change to the company policy… but I’m warning you, it’ll  never fly.

Sparks fly

Having an angry and intense argument or a feeling of mutual love between two people on their first meeting. 

• Sparks fly every time she has to interact with her ex-husband.

• I could see the sparks fly between them, the first time they met.
  他们第一次见面时，我可以看到他们之间花火四射。
